Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and other blood draws on patients across the age spectrum, from pediatric to geriatric.
  • Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
  • Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Centrifuge specimens and prepare them for further processing or analysis as needed.
  • Package specimens securely and appropriately for transport, following specific protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, ensuring accurate labeling.
  • Follow all procedures and protocols related to specimen handling and transport to preserve sample quality.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to specimen collection, processing, and patient information.
  • Update patient information in the system and ensure data is complete and current.
  • Answer telephone calls, respond to inquiries, and read laboratory results to callers when appropriate and authorized.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Aid with general specimen processing, including handling, organizing, and preparing samples for testing.

Essential Skills

  • Phlebotomy experience with 0–2+ years performing venipunctures.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Phlebotomy certification.
  • Washington State Phlebotomy License.
  • Proficiency in blood draws, specimen collection, and specimen processing.
  • Ability to draw blood from patients of all ages, including pediatric and geriatric populations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to accurately label, handle, and process specimens according to test orders and protocols.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory safety and specimen handling.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with hard stick patients is preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in matching requisitions, labeling specimens, and maintaining records.
  • Effective communication skills to clearly and courteously explain procedures to patients.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
  • Comfort handling multiple draws per patient and managing a high volume of specimens.
