Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and other blood draws on patients across the age spectrum, from pediatric to geriatric.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Centrifuge specimens and prepare them for further processing or analysis as needed.
- Package specimens securely and appropriately for transport, following specific protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, ensuring accurate labeling.
- Follow all procedures and protocols related to specimen handling and transport to preserve sample quality.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation related to specimen collection, processing, and patient information.
- Update patient information in the system and ensure data is complete and current.
- Answer telephone calls, respond to inquiries, and read laboratory results to callers when appropriate and authorized.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
- Aid with general specimen processing, including handling, organizing, and preparing samples for testing.
Essential Skills
- Phlebotomy experience with 0–2+ years performing venipunctures.
- Demonstrated ability to perform venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Phlebotomy certification.
- Washington State Phlebotomy License.
- Proficiency in blood draws, specimen collection, and specimen processing.
- Ability to draw blood from patients of all ages, including pediatric and geriatric populations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to accurately label, handle, and process specimens according to test orders and protocols.
- Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory safety and specimen handling.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with hard stick patients is preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in matching requisitions, labeling specimens, and maintaining records.
- Effective communication skills to clearly and courteously explain procedures to patients.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
- Comfort handling multiple draws per patient and managing a high volume of specimens.
