The Laboratory Phlebotomist is responsible for performing phlebotomy and EKG’s on patients of all age groups, test ordering in the HIS, ABN verification, and may train new employees.

Responsibilities

• Must possess ability to perform phlebotomy on all age groups
• Consistently obtains quality and usable samples
• Ensures patients are left in satisfactory condition following venipuncture
• Verifies patient ID using two identifiers
• Handles all specimens in accordance with Universal Precautions
• Continuous cooperation with co-workers and other hospital departments to ensure our customers are satisfied
• Must possess ability to perform EKG’s according to hospital protocols
• Appropriately handles Advanced Beneficiary Notice, informing patients of the options they have when Medicare is likely to deny payment for testing
• Informs patient that Medicare requires that the test be billed to the patient in the event Medicare denies payment
• Informs patient that he/she may decline to have test performed
• Informs patient that he/she may contact physician for additional diagnosis and return at later date for ordered tests
• Informs patient that he/she may elect to pay for testing if/when Medicare denies payment
• Actively participates and supports co-workers participating in Community Cares initiatives
• Works with students and other interested persons to promote the clinical laboratory profession
• Demonstrates a positive attitude at all times
• Demonstrates flexibility when workload requires changing workflow priorities or schedule

• Recognizes and reports Laboratory Compliance issues, including potential fraud, over- or under-billing for services performed, CPT coding changes or discrepancies, and questionable medical necessity
• Performs general housekeeping duties to keep work areas safe from contamination and physical hazards

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or GED
• Experience: Less than 1 year
