About the role
This position is a float position available in both clinic and hospital settings. The primary function includes collecting, labeling, and transporting patient specimens for testing, adhering to strict protocols and maintaining a high level of customer service.
Responsibilities
- Collects and transports patient specimens for testing, including routine and advanced venipuncture.
- Upholds organizational values by providing exemplary customer service skills.
- Assumes coordinator responsibilities in the absence of supervisory staff, assigning work to others.
- May act as a department liaison on off shifts/weekends, showing flexibility in schedules.
- Initiates interventions on unacceptable specimens and follows strict protocol for patient identification.
- Processes emergency orders (STATS and timed studies) within the required timeframe.
- Labels specimens accurately according to established laboratory procedures before processing or transport.
- Operates departmental computer programs to manage orders, consolidate or cancel tests as authorized, and enter comments.
- Reconciles outstanding test orders that haven't been resolved through standard procedures.
- Maintains stock of commonly used supplies, performing routine inspections and reviewing expiration dates.
- Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and takes prompt action to resolve specimen/collection processing issues.
- Trains and mentors new staff or students in blood collection and/or specimen processing as directed.
- Participates in quality improvement activities and represents the department on interdepartmental teams.
- Supports a positive team atmosphere by participating in all group meetings and team building activities.
- Formulates a plan for professional development with supervisor.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prefer 2 years of relevant phlebotomy experience with a Phlebotomy certificate preferred.
- Willingness to work at various locations and shifts.
- Basic computer skills with typing minimum 35 words per minute required.
- Basic medical terminology and customer service skills expected.
Qualifications
- Physical requirements: 20-50 lbs occasionally, 11-25 lbs frequently, 01-10 lbs constantly; lifting 50 lbs max; carrying up to 25 lbs; standing and walking frequently; occasional sitting; close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing).
- Environmental factors: Blood-borne pathogen exposure, bio-hazardous waste, chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors, communicable diseases, electrical shock, floor surfaces, hot/cold temperatures, indoor/outdoor conditions, latex, lighting, patient care/handling injuries, radiation, shift work, travel may be required.
