About the role
The Coral Restoration Project Scuba Diver/Specialist will work with a team in the Philippines to engage, evangelize, and disciple indigenous, unreached people groups through a project designed to restore people’s relationship with creation and their Creator as they help the environment by preserving and expanding local coral reefs.Responsibilities
- Help maintain coral restoration project sites
- Auxiliary in the planning and construction of new coral restoration sites
- Assist with coral growth measurements, coral health/bleaching inspections, structure maintenance, coral out planting and general day-to-day operations
- Prepare gear and supplies, manage, and maintain equipment and tools
- Perform coral reef monitoring and management activities, including documenting disease outbreaks and bleaching, crown of thorns mitigation, marine debris removal, photogrammetry, etc.
- Manage data, perform analyses, and write reports
- Collect and annotate photos to identify corals, algae, and invertebrates
- Design and implement independent research projects or experiments to support nursery performance and restoration goals
- Participate in outreach events, provide educational and interactive activities, and work hard to integrate the Gospel and Creation Care in every event
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental policy, or similar field
- Certification for Scuba Diving
- Experience in coral restoration planning, project management and ability to manage teams of divers
- Ability to live in a remote location and some experience with filing scuba tanks, maintaining and repairing scuba gear
- Ability to work on a multi-cultural team
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds
- Some electronic/construction/welding experience
- Capacity to work with local governments and ensure compliance with laws and regulations
- Experience coordinating projects involving multiple stakeholders (particularly those involving coastal communities and government agencies)
- Excellent organizational skill set including written and verbal communication, time management, and ability to prioritize tasks
- Enjoy being on boats (even in heat or inclement weather)
