About the Role

Under the direction of a licensed pharmacist, selects and prepares medications, pharmaceutical products, and intravenous admixtures. Assists in the dispensing and distribution of medications. Maintains pharmacy merchandise and equipment. Reviews medication cassettes for returned medication, unit doses medication, and transports pharmacy merchandise. Performs other duties as required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare medications and supplies for dispensing, including:
    • Pre-packing bulk medications
    • Compounding ointments, creams, oral solutions, and other medications
    • Compounding total parenteral nutrition solutions
    • Compounding large-volume intravenous mixtures
    • Compounding small-volume IVPB mixtures
    • Preparing prescriptions for outpatients
    • Checking and unit dosing medication
  • Control and audit narcotics/stock substances
  • Prepare inventories, order drugs and supplies, receive drugs, and stock shelves in various pharmacy locations
  • Perform monthly inspections, maintain workload records, and collect quality-assurance data
  • Transport medications, drug-delivery devices, and other pharmacy equipment from the pharmacy to hospitals
  • Assist in training new employees
  • Prepare sterile preparations with adherence to departmental policies and procedures
  • Assist other pharmacy staff members as needed

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 1 year of experience
  • Current state pharmacy technician certification
  • Valid Driver’s license with safe driving record

Skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong mathematical and computer literacy skills

Work Environment

  • Occupational Risks: Some portions (less than 50%) of daily assignments involve occupational risk, such as cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals, injuries from falls, or back injury sustained with assisting in moving, lifting, or positioning patients, equipment, or materials.
  • Safety Equipment: Job does not require the use of safety equipment, such as HEPA mask, for infection prevention.
  • Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure: OSHA Category I - Exposure not anticipated. Work does not involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissue, and does not require performing unplanned exposure tasks.
  • Ergonomic Risks: Significant portions (more than 50%) of daily assignments involve ergonomic risk, such as regular repetitive tasks, forceful or prolonged exertions of the hands, vibration, cold temperatures, heavy lifting, pulling, pushing, or carrying of heavy objects, poor body mechanics, restrictive workstations, or awkward postures.
  • Lifting: Job requires lifting up to 30 pounds.
  • Climbing Stairs: Job does not require climbing stairs.
  • Manual Skills: Some portions (less than 50%) of daily assignments involve application of manual skills requiring motor coordination in combination with finger dexterity, e.g., typing or machine operations.
  • Physical Effort: Significant portions (more than 50%) of daily assignments involve prolonged standing, transporting patients, material or equipment, or lifting, moving, or carrying heavy (over 30 pounds) materials for intermittent periods throughout the day.

Schedule

Work may require evening, night, holiday, or weekend assignments on occasion.
