Pharmacy Technician, Full-Time Rotate

About the role

Join the Inpatient Pharmacy at UChicago Medicine, a world-class academic healthcare system. This role involves preparing medications and supplies for dispensing under the supervision of a pharmacist and rotating through all work areas of the pharmacy department. The Inpatient Pharmacy supports direct patient care for all ages and populations, specializing in complex medical needs and collaborating with providers and insurance companies to ensure optimal therapy outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Transport medications (excluding controlled substances), IVs, TPNs, chemotherapy, medication cassettes, and other supplies to nursing units and clinics.
• Add patient-specific and restock medications to Omnicell machines in patient care areas, excluding the sterile corridor of surgery.
• Return discontinued and outdated medications from Omnicells to the Pharmacy.
• Replace CPR cart medications following Dr. Cart events.
• Transfer patient-specific medications between Omnicells when patients are transferred between units.
• Rotate through all pharmacy work areas, collaborating as a team to achieve pharmaceutical care for patients.
• Fill first doses, restock, and prepare patient-specific medications from carousels.
• Perform monthly inspections of nursing units, clinics, and pharmacy areas as directed.
• Maintain work areas (IV Room, UD Area, Manufacturing area, storerooms, pharmacy satellites) by restocking and cleaning.
• Answer phone calls and triage communication according to policy.
• Collect quality assurance data and maintain workload records.
• Prepare medications and supplies for dispensing, including:
  • Prepackaging bulk medications into unit dose-specific syringes and vials for adult and pediatric patients.
  • Compounding oral suspensions and Grade One mouthwash.
  • Compounding IV admixtures, chemotherapy, desensitization medications, high-cost biologics, and pediatric IVs.
  • Restocking CPR cart trays.
• Prepare inventories, order drugs and supplies from the pharmacy storeroom, receive drugs, and stock shelves in various pharmacy locations.
• Facilitate timely medication distribution by prioritizing orders, seeking pharmacist verification when necessary, and handling STAT orders.
• Prepare outpatient prescriptions and perform cashiering duties in the Outpatient Pharmacy as needed.
• Assist in training new pharmacists and technician employees in their work areas.
• Perform other patient- and drug-related duties within the legal scope of licensure as assigned by the pharmacist or supervisor.
• Complete and pass required annual technician competencies in a timely fashion.
• Comply with all departmental, hospital, and regulating agency policies, as well as state and federal laws.

Requirements

• Current Illinois Pharmacy Technician License.
• High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
• Minimum of one year of pharmacy experience, or completion of an ASHP-approved pharmacy technician vocational course, or enrollment in a college of pharmacy or at the University of Chicago. Graduates of foreign pharmacy programs are also eligible.
• Ability to work as a team player to provide optimal patient care through superior pharmaceutical services.
• Good communication skills for interacting with patients and staff.
• Considerable knowledge of basic pharmacy practices and procedures, medications, and medical supplies.
• Good knowledge of record-keeping practices.
• Successful completion of core technician competencies and subsequent yearly competencies.
• Strong attention to detail and verbal communication skills.
• Familiarity with computers and keyboard usage.
• Sensitivity to patient care issues as they pertain to pharmacy practice.

Preferred Qualifications

• Illinois Pharmacy Technician Certification is highly desirable.

This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) position with rotating shifts, located in Hyde Park within the Inpatient Pharmacy department.

Pay

The pay range for this position reflects the anticipated wage or salary for a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is based on current market data, reviewed annually. Compensation at hire will vary based on candidate qualifications, experience, and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements will have pay ranges negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
