Pharmacy Technician Buyer (Certified/Registered)

Shift Description

  • Order pharmaceuticals and IV supplies, assigning purchase order numbers and documenting accurately.
  • Monitor inventory levels to ensure proper quantities are ordered to meet budgetary goals.
  • Adjust inventory levels in response to external disasters, including terrorism, bioterrorism, and weather.
  • Notify wholesalers and suppliers to ensure timely product receipt and quality.
  • Determine product selection based on contract pricing, order quantity, availability, purchase history, and patient safety considerations (e.g., labeling and packaging).
  • Verify orders against corresponding invoices to ensure accurate and complete delivery.
  • Use computers, barcoding, online ordering, and automation to enhance productivity and safety.
  • When not using a Prime Vendor, secure the best contractual pricing, delivery, and terms (e.g., for coagulation factors, albumin, IVIG, and chemotherapy).
  • Monitor medication allocations and shortages to maintain optimal inventory.

Inventory Distribution

  • Deliver pharmaceuticals and replace pharmacy stock in a timely manner.
  • Fill requisitions accurately for ancillary areas, adhering to recommended stock levels.
  • Input necessary information into the inventory financial system to properly credit or debit intended accounts, including department charges.
  • Order and manage controlled substances in compliance with department, State, and DEA regulations.
  • Monitor PAR levels for changes in usage, with emphasis on high-cost medications.

Purchase Requisitions and Invoices

  • Forward invoices and necessary paperwork to the Accounting Department promptly.
  • Process rebates, credits, and returns promptly and completely.
  • Determine alternate product sources and document loaned and borrowed activity.
  • Monitor new product arrivals to ensure charge codes are in effect before distribution.
  • Communicate with vendors and wholesalers to correct problems and avert supply shortages.
  • Maintain accurate invoices and paperwork for charity and mission organizations.

Coordination of Department Activities

  • Store outdated pharmaceuticals separately until returned to the manufacturer or reverse distributor for credit or replacement.
  • Strictly adhere to chemotherapy and hazardous substance policies and procedures.
  • Conduct ongoing surveillance of stock to remove outdated products.
  • Follow hospital policies on patient confidentiality regarding all medications.
  • Train technicians, pharmacy students, and pharmacy interns under the direction of a registered pharmacist.
  • Operate printers, pumps, and other equipment used in daily operations.
  • Report problems in a timely and constructive manner.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Certified or Registered Pharmacy Technician required.
  • Previous Buyer experience is required; pharmacy experience is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel; Lawson experience is preferred.
  • Must be able to type at least 30 words per minute.
