About the role
A pharmacy technician assists pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the medication inventory, and maintaining patient records. All technician activities are supervised by a licensed pharmacist.
Responsibilities
- Fills physician orders, medication carts, and stock requisitions accurately.
- Prepares intravenous admixtures and other sterile preparations (including parenteral nutrition) safely and accurately using appropriate techniques.
- Delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas accurately per established schedule.
- Aids in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing medications and supplies in appropriate locations. Aids in returns and recalls of medications.
- Aids in completing and documenting all assigned medication storage area inspections as required.
- Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable medications.
- Aids in repackaging bulk medications in unit-dose packages safely and accurately per established procedures using appropriate techniques.
- Aids in accurately filling medications and maintaining inventory in automated dispensing machines.
- Aids in refilling controlled substances accurately and reconciling inventories in automated distribution system in accordance with state laws and regulations and facility policy.
- Answers telephone using appropriate phone etiquette, fields questions, and directs calls as needed.
- Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately.
- Fills charges and credits for patient medications accurately and participates in interdepartmental billing.
- Maintains current technician certification.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent. College courses or vocational education desirable but not required.
- Experience: 2–3 years pharmacy technician experience preferred, but not required.
- Licensure/Certification: Registered as a pharmacy technician in good standing with the State Board of Pharmacy. Certification as designed by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or similar certification approved by Kansas Board of Pharmacy prior to starting job or complete certification within one year of employment.
