Pharmacy Technician

Position Location: Hospital for Special Surgery – First Shift, 40 scheduled weekly hours in the Pharmacy department.

Qualifications

• Pharmacy Technician Registration in accordance with Connecticut state laws and regulations required at hire or within 2 weeks of hire, or Registered Pharmacy Intern License in accordance with Connecticut state laws and regulations.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; college preferred.
• Two to three years of institutional pharmacy technician experience preferred.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows-based computer software systems preferred.
• Valid Connecticut driver’s license required.

About the Role

The pharmacy technician assists the pharmacist in preparing and distributing medications, performing sterile admixture compounding, maintaining drug inventory, and maintaining patient records. The pharmacy technician works only under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.

Physical Demands

• Repetitive use of hands and fingers (preparing IV admixtures, use of computer keyboard).
• May require lifting and carrying light loads (20–30 lbs), including boxes, equipment, unit dose carts, and IV solutions.
• Stooping, kneeling, walking, or standing for long periods of time.
• Ability to physically operate equipment used for the job.
• Ability to view written documents.

Cognitive Demands

• Solves distribution-related problems.
• Performs numerous algebraic calculations daily for admixture and compounding equations.

• Performs work accurately with attention to detail within specified time periods.
• Works cooperatively with health-system and pharmacy staff.

• Communicates effectively both orally and in writing.
• Assists in meeting the pharmaceutical care needs of patients under pharmacist supervision.
• Possible exposure and handling of latex, antineoplastic, and other hazardous drugs.

Responsibilities

• Fills physician orders, medication carts, Pyxis stations, and/or stock requisitions accurately.
• Replenishes medications in floor stock areas accurately.
• Prepares intravenous admixtures or other sterile products accurately.
• Delivers medications and supplies to all patient care areas per established schedule.
• Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies and procedures.
• Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations.
• Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.
• Restocks medication and IV dispensing areas accurately within specified time periods.
• Prepackages bulk medications in unit dose packages accurately per established procedures.
• Contributes to the effective operation of the department.
• Picks up orders, requisitions, and medications for return from patient care areas during delivery rounds.
• Generates reports, pick lists, and labels as required.
• Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately and files them in appropriate locations.
• Participates in the quality improvement activities of the department.
• Completes and documents all assigned medication storage area inspections at least monthly.
• Maintains competence required for current job title/position.
• Maintains current technician registration.
• Completes all competence/skills assessment requirements and participates in required training programs.
