About the role

At CVS Health, Pharmacy Technicians play a critical role in supporting our pharmacy teams to deliver operational and service excellence within retail locations. Technicians are often the first point of contact, assisting patients and customers to ensure prescriptions are filled promptly, safely, and accurately while providing an exceptional experience. They operate as part of the pharmacy team through consistent application of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), best practices, and effective communication, demonstrating genuine care and contributing to a safe and inclusive culture.

Once in role, Technicians must complete a rigorous company training program and satisfy all registration, licensing, and certification requirements according to their State’s Board of Pharmacy guidelines. Until these requirements are met, duties may be restricted by the Pharmacy Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all company SOPs at each workstation to support safe and effective pharmacy operations and improve patient health.
  • Adhere to pharmacy workflow procedures at production, pick-up, drive-thru, and drop-off stations for safe and accurate prescription fulfillment.
  • Create positive patient experiences by showing empathy and genuine care during interactions at pick-up, drive-thru, and over the phone; offer immunizations and other services; and solve or escalate patient problems.
  • Complete basic inventory activities, as permitted by law, including putting away medication deliveries, cycle counts, returns-to-stocks, and waiting bin inventories.
  • Contribute to a high-performing team by embracing a growth mindset, seeking feedback, and expanding clinical and technical knowledge to better assist patients.
  • Remain flexible for scheduling and business needs, including voluntarily traveling to stores in the market to work shifts as needed.
  • Comply with all relevant federal, state, and local laws, regulations, professional standards, and ethical principles, including CVS policies for patient safety, controlled substance dispensing, and patient privacy.
  • Deliver additional patient health care services (e.g., immunizations, point-of-care testing, and offsite clinics) where allowable by law and supported by required training and certification.
  • Where permissible, support immunizations by:
    • Completing additional licensure and training to obtain Technician Immunizer status.
    • Educating patients about vaccines and referring questions to the Pharmacist-on-duty.
    • Monitoring and responding to adverse reactions and reporting events per public health requirements.
    • Reviewing, collecting, and documenting patient information and vaccine supplies.

Requirements

  • Must comply with all state board of pharmacy requirements or laws governing the practice of pharmacy, including age, education, and licensure/certification.
  • If the state board of pharmacy does not mandate a minimum age requirement, must be at least 16 years of age.
  • If the state board of pharmacy does not mandate a minimum educational requirement, must have a high school diploma or equivalent, or be actively enrolled in high school or a high school equivalency program.
  • State-level licensure and national certification requirements vary by state.

Essential Functions

  • Attendance: Regular and predictable attendance, including nights and weekends; ability to complete required training within the designated timeframe.

    • Ability to pivot quickly between tasks to meet patient and business needs.
    • Ability to confirm prescription information and label accuracy for patient safety.

    • Notice and respond appropriately to patients’ reactions.
  • Communication Skills:
    • Use and understand verbal and written communication to interact with patients and colleagues.
    • Practice active listening by giving full attention, asking questions, and not interrupting.
  • Mathematical Reasoning: Ability to use math to solve problems, such as determining prescription quantities, day’s supply, and bottle counts.
  • Problem Resolution: Identify challenging interactions and choose the best course of action when faced with multiple options.
  • Physical Demands:
    • Remain mobile and upright for extended periods.
    • Lift, scan, and bag items; reach overhead or stretch to grasp items.
    • Move fingers repetitively for tasks like picking, pinching, typing, or working with small parts.
    • Extend hands and arms in multiple directions to place, move, or lift items.
    • Control precision, such as adjusting machines to exact positions.
    • Stoop considerably, using lower extremities and back muscles to move items between low and high positions.
    • Close visual acuity for tasks like transcribing, reading, and inspecting small parts.
    • Occasionally lift up to 20 lbs; frequently lift up to 10 lbs; consistently lift negligible weight.
    • Express or exchange ideas through spoken word to convey detailed or important instructions accurately.
    • Receive detailed information through oral communication.
  • Perform any additional tasks as directed by a Supervisor or Manager.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of previous experience as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Previous experience in a pharmacy, retail, medical, or customer service setting.
  • Ability to work in the home store and travel to other locations in the market to meet business needs.

Pay

The typical pay range for this role is $16.00 - $24.00 per hour. The actual base salary offer will depend on factors such as experience, education, geography, and other relevant considerations.

Schedule

  • Full-time position with an anticipated 40 hours per week.
