Pharmacy Technician

Responsibilities

• Reviews practitioner medication orders and prepares medications for review and dispensing by a pharmacist.
• Operates electronic drug dispensing system (EDDS) for inventory control and distribution of pharmaceuticals and related supplies, including maintaining, assigning, refilling, and removing medication, including controlled substances, and generating and interpreting reports.
• Maintains operating room medication inventory, including controlled substances.
• Prepares intravenous admixtures, including chemotherapy, critical care infusions, and pediatric infusions, using aseptic techniques in a controlled environment according to computer-generated and/or pharmacist-approved formulation records.
• Works in a USP 797 clean room environment and follows USP 795 procedures.
• Resolves controlled substance discrepancies and participates in inventory management.
• Delivers medications to clinic, procedural, treatment, operating room, and patient care areas.
• Retrieves medication orders.
• Repackages and labels medications for distribution according to pharmacist-approved Packaging and Labeling Records.
• Prepares emergency medication kits for pharmacist review and distribution.
• Processes medication requisitions for departments and laboratories for pharmacist verification.
• Reconciles patient and department medication charges.
• Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment according to standards.
• Assists in maintaining related Pharmacy records and files, performing equipment calibration and maintenance.
• Maintains the Pharmacy and medication supply areas in a neat and orderly fashion, ensuring medications are stored under proper conditions for light, temperature, sanitation, and segregation.
• Participates in quality assessment and improvement activities and medication safety initiatives.
• Reports actual, prevented, and near-miss medication errors using approved processes.
• Answers the telephone and triages as appropriate.
• Interacts with internal and external customers in accordance with hospital Customer Service Standards.
• Assists in the orientation and training of other pharmacy technicians and interns.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Completion of one to two years of college preferred.
• Maintains current unrestricted Rhode Island Pharmacy Technician licensure.
• Holds and maintains current National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) or has a minimum of one-year licensed pharmacy technician work experience, sits for the National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) exam within the first 6 months of hire, and achieves and maintains National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) within 12 months of hire.
• Possesses basic computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

• Physical ability to lift, carry, and maneuver medication delivery equipment and pharmaceutical-related inventories, including extended periods of work time spent standing and walking.
• Requires the visual and manual dexterity to operate a computer.
• New hires must successfully pass a drug screen in conformance with Rhode Island State Law.

Independent Action

• Performs independently within department policies and practices.
• Refers specific complex problems to supervisor where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.
