Responsibilities
- Understand the pharmacy workflow for medication returns and medication disposal.
- Interpret and understand medical abbreviations.
- Identify and differentiate different types of medication orders (Scheduled, PRN, Once, STAT, Now).
- Accurately interpret EPIC pharmacy labels.
- Ensure all medication-related work is reviewed by a Pharmacist.
- Recognize and identify various classifications of medications, medication names, dosage forms, and routes of administration.
- Use available print and online references as appropriate.
- Accurately label all medication dosage forms, including auxiliary labels for expiration and storage as required.
- Troubleshoot Pyxis equipment (e.g., failed drawers, inventory, outdates, discrepancies).
- Utilize technology in the pharmacy, including Carousels, DoseEdge, Simplifi, Pyxis, and Prepackaging Systems.
- Prepare non-sterile compounding and packaging, including drawing up oral syringes and compounding oral suspensions.
- Recognize regulations for repackaging medications and comply with all required labeling and documentation procedures.
- May be exposed to hazardous materials, including chemotherapeutic agents and agents causing reproductive risks.
- Answer phones, assist callers with missing medication, respond to Pyxis stockouts, and respond to EPIC in-basket messages.
- Process patient charges (including narcotic charges), credits, and returns to stock any medication not used by patients.
- Exchange emergency carts and complete required documentation.
- Maintain cleanliness of all equipment and work areas.
- Adhere to departmental and hospital policies and procedures, and follow safety, quality assurance, and infection control standards.
- Know the laws and regulations related to controlled substances and handle them securely while completing all required documentation.
- Participate in departmental quality assurance processes and educational activities as assigned.
- Understand and uphold regulatory requirements as stated by LABP, USP, TJC, CMS, and any other governing/accrediting body for OLOL.
- Use Microsoft Office products, fax, and copy machines and other office equipment as necessary.
Qualifications
- High School or equivalent.
- Effective following of directions, analysis of problems, and interpretation of analytical data.
- Strong communication skills with an emphasis on customer service.
- Attention to detail for providing high-quality care and accurate medication preparation.
- Successful passing of the National Pharmacy Technician exam; State Pharmacy Certification.
