Job Summary
Assumes the responsibility for the day-to-day operations, including assisting with all aspects and procedures relating to the procurement, preparation, distribution, audit/accountability, inventory, and/or record-keeping, of a pharmacy service or operation. Assists the pharmacist(s) in performing a variety of technical duties related to the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients, including unique tasks consistent with technician certification status requirement. All responsibilities are carried out under the supervision of a pharmacist. Complies with laws and regulations of appropriate state and federal agencies and guidelines of the Joint Commission.
Leadership-related duties
- Manages the distributional, educational, informational, and operational functions of the pharmacy department, with a specific focus on technician leadership.
- Serves as a resource for Pyxis equipment, and act as an educator to the professional staff.
- Serves as a resource for automated dispensing equipment and acts as an educator to the professional staff when needed.
- Oversees the process for technician monthly rounding on the units (i.e. unit inspections).
- Assists the operations manager and supervisor(s) with designing the future direction of pharmacy workflow.
Essential Functions
- Exhibits professional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills when interacting with supervisors, peers, subordinates, and interdepartmental colleagues.
- Supervises, troubleshoots, and participates in all aspects of pharmacy operations when needed. This includes, but is not limited to obtaining supplies, preparing labels for UD and IV medication orders, performing calculations, and compounding aliquot doses under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
- Complies with laws and regulations of appropriate state and federal agencies and guidelines of the Joint Commission.
- Distributes and/or transports medications to appropriate patient care areas in a timely manner and under a pharmacist's supervision.
- Receives and/or initiates verbal medication orders and checks another technician's refill of medications or repackaging of medications from bulk to unit dose under pharmacist supervision.
- Evaluates all activities associated with pharmacy operations, assesses situational or problem occurrences, research additional information (if necessary), performs an analysis of the information gathered, and makes an appropriate, informed recommendation for improvement.
- Provides education, training, and maintenance of all required documentation for departmental team members and students regarding unique aspects of pharmacy service or operation. This includes but is not limited to initial and annual competencies; compliance with USP 795, USP 797, and USP 800 regulations; and basic operational functions (i.e. unit dose, IV compounding, etc.).
- Supervises all aspects of technician positions, including, but not limited to recruitment, training, initial and annual competencies, workflow, scheduling, conflict resolution, corrective action, and performance reviews.
- Serves as a good steward of the institution's resources, including time on the job.
Supervisory/Management Responsibilities
- This is a supervisor job which may have direct supervision of team members which may include hire/termination authority, disciplinary authority, and performance management responsibilities.
- May have budget input or responsibilities.
Minimum Requirements
- Education - Graduate of an ASHP-accredited pharmacy technician training program required. Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a business- or clinically related field of study preferred.
- Experience - Five (5) years pharmacy-related experience. Previous leadership experience preferred. Hospital-based, pharmacy-related experience preferred.
- Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses - Current registration or eligible for registration, with SC Board of Pharmacy as a state certified pharmacy technician (certified technicians will have passed the National Technician Certification Board exam or a SC Board of Pharmacy approved exam AND must maintain current certification status). State certification must be obtained within 3 months of hire.
