Pharmacy Tech - Pharmacy Automation Technician
About the role
This Pharmacy Automation Technician position supports inpatient pharmacy operations across Carilion Clinic's system of inpatient pharmacies, including a 718-bed Level 1 Trauma Center with a NICU and Children's Hospital. Technicians in this role are essential members of the healthcare team and directly contribute to safe, timely medication access for adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients.
Responsibilities
- Serve as Omnicell Administrators, implementing, configuring, and maintaining Automated Dispensing Cabinets throughout inpatient units.
- Maintain Central Pharmacy Workflow and Controlled Substance Workflow within the Omnicell system, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and operational efficiency.
- Optimize automated dispensing cabinet performance by managing medication profiles, adding and removing medications, and establishing appropriate par levels.
- Drive data-informed decisions to improve efficiency and support patient care using advanced utilization analytics.
- Provide system-wide support to Carilion Clinic's inpatient pharmacies, including on-call coverage to ensure uninterrupted automation operations.
- Resolve automation-related issues and minimize disruption to patient care by working directly with nurses, anesthesia providers, and clinical staff.
- Manage medication charges, operate registers, and manage financial transactions.
- Ensure regulatory compliance by maintaining records, preparing bank deposits, and managing inventory using PAR levels.
- Deliver medications and supplies to various locations.
- Interact with patients, staff, and vendors.
Requirements
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Previous pharmacy work experience is preferred. Registration with the Virginia Department of Health Professionals is required, along with Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Certification relevant to work area within 6 months of hire.
Qualifications
- Must be able to maintain familiarity with a large number (1000-2000) of medications and focus on attention to detail/accuracy.
- Customer service orientation is essential.
- Knowledge and use of general office equipment and procedures, including computer/keyboard.
- Ability to solve simple mathematical and logistical problems in the work environment.
- Effective time management, efficient work, and accurate following of procedures with minimum supervision.
Skills
Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities are essential, as technicians must quickly assess and address complex technical and operational challenges in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
