Job Summary
Primary Job Responsibilities
- Accurately prepares medications for pharmacist review before being dispensed.
- Performs tasks involved with preparation and labeling of IV admixtures and associated record keeping.
- Packages dry orals, liquid orals and small volume injectable in unit-of-use containers using a combination of mechanical equipment and manual procedures.
- Delivers medications to patient care areas within appropriate time frames.
- Safeguards drug items by ensuring they are appropriately billed to various areas or patients.
- Ensures expired medications are removed from pharmacy inventory and stored properly.
- Processes transfers and discharges according to established departmental procedures.
- Aids pharmacists in maintaining accurate medication profiles for each patient receiving medications, according to department and hospital policies and procedures.
- Aids in managing drug stock including, but not limited to, shelving new drug stock with proper item rotation, arranging stock and organizing storage areas, documenting need for ordering items, and maintaining proper documentation and record keeping.
- Aids in managing incoming telephone calls to ensure proper triage of calls.
- Aids pharmacists in ensuring drug storage locations are maintained in an appropriate manner, e.g., floor stock, automated dispensing cabinets, surgery carts, crash carts, etc.
- Aids in effectively training and orienting new personnel or students to the departmental services and programs.
- Satisfactorily completes required hospital programs.
- Maintains the cleanliness and order of the pharmacy department.
- Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
- Education: High school diploma required. National certification (PTCB) and either state pharmacy technician OR pharmacist intern license required. Previous Pharmacy Technician experience preferred.
- Essential Physical Abilities/Motor Skills: Sedentary Work, frequent standing, kneeling, crouching, lifting up to 20 lbs, pushing/pulling/carrying items between 20-100 lbs, near and midrange acuity, motor coordination, visual and hearing abilities, motor coordination, ability to use tools and equipment.
- Essential Mental Abilities: Adaptability, focus, reading and interpreting documents, math skills for compounds and pricing calculations, ability to adapt to fast-paced, changing situations, ability to communicate through speaking and listening, ability to read and write effectively, ability to give and receive information, ability to interact professionally and effectively with others.
- Essential Sensory Requirements: Visual perception, near and midrange acuity, motor coordination, ability to see and hear for work-related purposes, ability to communicate by phone, in person, and in written formats, ability to interact with co-workers, hospital staff, administration, patients, physicians, the public and all internal and external customers.
