Pharmacy Manager, Hematology / Oncology

Essential Responsibilities / Duties

  • Operate daily pharmacy operations, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and policies.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain policies, procedures, and SOPs to support safe, efficient, and high-quality pharmacy services.
  • Oversee medication management processes, including procurement, preparation, storage, and distribution to ensure accuracy and safety.
  • Assist with project management, including planning, execution, stakeholder engagement, and presenting findings to senior leadership.
  • Oversee high-cost drug utilization for ambulatory areas, focusing on Hematology/Oncology and other high-cost specialty drugs.
  • Provide on-call support as required, maintaining readiness to address urgent operational and clinical needs.
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and support audits and regulatory inspections as needed.
  • Supervise and provide leadership to pharmacy staff, including pharmacists, liaisons, and support personnel, to maintain high standards of service and safety.
  • Manage human resource functions, including recruitment, performance evaluations, staff development, training, orientation, scheduling, and disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Create and maintain a healthy work environment where staff feel supported, accountable, and engaged in organizational initiatives.
  • Engage in the department, manage up, own team decisions, and support departmental and organizational initiatives.
  • Act with honor, hold self and others to the highest ethical standards, and communicate regularly with interdisciplinary leadership teams.
  • Stay current with trends and developments in pharmacy practice and healthcare.
  • Participate in budget development and financial management, including identifying cost-saving opportunities and managing drug budgets effectively.
  • Afford support for financial processes such as forecasting needs, conducting financial assessments of value, and assisting with the management of productivity.
  • Lead quality assurance initiatives and process improvement projects to enhance efficiency and safety within the pharmacy department and support departmental goals.
  • Utilize the hospital's values as the basis for decision-making and to facilitate the division's hospital mission.
  • Collaborate with hematology and oncology clinical teams to develop and implement clinical programs that enhance patient care and optimize therapeutic outcomes.
  • Develop and implement training programs for pharmacy staff, the PGY2 oncology pharmacy resident, and students, to ensure clinical and operational competency and foster professional development and continuous learning.
  • Train and mentor pharmacy staff according to defined outcome expectations and responsibilities, supporting education and maximizing professional potential.
  • Lead quality assurance initiatives and process improvement projects to enhance efficiency and safety within the pharmacy department and support departmental goals.

Job Requirements

  • Completed a degree in Pharmacy (Bachelor’s or PharmD).
  • Experience: PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency and PGY-2 Pharmacy Specialty or HSPAL Residency or PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency and 2 years of pertinent experience or 4 years of pertinent experience.
  • PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (If none, please enter “N/A”): Experience in Hematology / Oncology with an Advance Degree (Master’s, MBA) and/or completion of an accredited residency with some leadership experience highly preferred.
  • CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED (If none, please enter “N/A”): Work requires licensure as a pharmacist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by the hire date.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs) (If none, please enter “N/A”): Comprehensive understanding of all the procedures, systems, and equipment used by pharmacists and technicians in the pharmacy as well as a high level of proficiency in performing duties and responsibilities. High level of analytical ability, organizational and personal management skills to function as a role model and focus to ensure a concerted approach to operations. Must also be able to evaluate current pharmacy services and procedures to improve them by gathering data from a wide variety of sources through an evaluative research process. In addition, must have some practice experience working with, as well as, revising and/or implementing information systems. High level of interpersonal skills to relate to hospital healthcare personnel working cooperatively and collaboratively to resolve situations and problems, as well as effectively communicating and displaying leadership within and outside of the department. High level of proficiency with standard software used in healthcare office settings (e.g. MS Word, Excel, web browser, etc.). Experience with pharmacy and clinical databases systems (such as QS1, Centricity, Meditech, Cerner, EPIC, SCM etc.) are a plus.
