Pharmacy Intern, PRN

Job Description

Accurately responds to medication dispensing requests, prepares medications for pharmacist review, delivers checked medications to nursing units, and returns unused or expired medications to appropriate pharmacy areas.

Developments and Maintenance

Develops and maintains skills necessary to function as a pharmacy technician, including proficiency in operational programs, dispensing and compounding activities, hospital computer systems, and medication systems.

Conflict Resolution and Patient Care

Uses effective negotiation skills to resolve conflicts and assures continuity of pharmaceutical care between shifts and among staff. Assists pharmacists with patient care activities and regulatory compliance tasks, including sterile compounding, controlled substance handling, medication order review, clinical consult review, medication distribution, and patient education.

Supporting Medication Safety

• Facilitates medication safety practices and continuous quality improvement, identifying, mitigating, and reporting potential and actual medication errors.
• Handles, processes, and appropriately disposes of all waste materials, including hazardous waste, using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Hazardous Medication Spill Kits as needed.
• Promotes cost-effective drug therapy and actively participates in stewardship and medication waste prevention programs.

Departmental Meetings and Educational Activities

Supports practice advancement initiatives, clinical projects, and stewardship initiatives led by colleagues and peers.

• Ability to provide optimal customer service having strong telephone and verbal communication skills
• Be able to work independently without constant supervision and as a team member
• Be able to pay close attention to detail and perform repetitive tasks accurately

• Demonstrated ability to follow written and verbal instructions effectively
• Knowledge and competence in aseptic techniques and chemotherapy product preparation, including hazardous product handling
• Expertise in general hospital pharmacy operations (including medication dispensing and IV compounding) and hospital regulatory compliance
• Expertise with hospital computer systems, pharmacy technology, and pharmacy automation
• Expertise in USP 795, 797, and 800 guidelines
• Expertise using pharmacy informatic solutions and services

Education and Work Experience

• High School Grad or Equiv
• Contemporary hospital pharmacy experience [Preferred]

Licenses and Certifications

• Pharmacy Intern (PSI) [Required]
• Licensed Pharmacist (RPH) [Preferred]

Pay Range

$16.04 - $25.67
