Mixing Technician

The Mixing Technician is primarily responsible for mixing chemotherapy, drug inventory control, and medical supplies management according to Coastal Cancer Center's values.

  • Reviews, evaluates, and assesses all orders and patient data with a Registered Nurse or another mixing technician when co-signing for medications.
  • Admixture signing, putting in appropriate volume and solution.
  • Calculates chemotherapy dosages and mixes IV drugs in accordance with provider’s orders accurately.
  • Demonstrates appropriate use of all required PPE for mixing chemotherapy.
  • Ensures that all infectious waste is disposed of and stored according to OSHA regulations.
  • Verifies dosages with an RN prior to delivering chemotherapy for administration.
  • Maintains drug inventory control cabinet, including restocking, drug assists, and clinical trial patient medications.
  • Manages special order medications and orders on a per patient basis for non-returnable refrigerated items.
  • Updates Lynx Mobile with new expiration dates, manufacturer information, and NDC numbers timely.
  • Communicates with the drug inventory group when new manufacturer/NDC medications arrive so they can be added to Centricity and ARIA.
  • Maintains DAP tracking and logs in a timely manner.
  • Communicates with the team and takes action and follows through regarding drug recalls and shortages.
  • Coordinates and manages ordering, delivery, and stocking of all clinical supplies.
  • Handles high levels of stress.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School education or equivalent.
  • Experience: Three (3) to five (5) years pharmaceutical work experience and general knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology and products preferred; previous experience entering information into computers.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Current National Pharmacy Technician Certification.
  • Knowledge: Knowledge of policies and regulations related to patient confidentiality and drug safety; knowledge of medication usage, dosage forms, and pharmaceutical calculations; knowledge of Chemotherapy / Biotherapy Safe Handling Course; knowledge of working with drug inventory control systems.
  • Skills: Skill in calculating drug doses and mixing drugs for chemotherapy; skill in computer operations and applications.
  • Abilities: Ability to work effectively as a member of the healthcare team; ability to communicate clearly; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients and their families, physicians, employees, and the public; ability to organize work and time efficiently; ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions; ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.
