Pharmacy Clinical Specialist Oncology

Salary range: $113,692.80 – $170,518.40 per year. Factors such as skills, experience, and internal equity may influence the actual offer.

About the role

Provides a minimum of two in-services per year on rational medication therapy and medication procedures to healthcare professionals and patients. Actively participates in training and mentorship within the pharmacy team and across service lines, including pharmaceutical care and disease state management. Works closely with multidisciplinary teams, providing backup support where appropriate. Maintains an active physical presence on patient care units for 80% of the shift, accounting for meetings, presentations, and precepting responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Participates as an active committee member within assigned service lines and additional meetings as required.
• Provides clinical expertise in oncology and other assigned clinical programs.
• Serves as the primary preceptor for pharmacy students and residents, fulfilling all documentation responsibilities.
• Communicates effectively with healthcare professionals, patients, and family members.
• Actively participates in local, state, and national pharmacy societies.
• Creates national visibility through presentations (e.g., poster presentations, managed case studies) or publications in nationally recognized journals.
• Monitors drug therapy regimens for contraindications, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, allergies, and disease state appropriateness.
• Recommends appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic medication alternatives to medical staff and peers.
• Provides accurate and timely medication information to all healthcare professionals.
• Leads or supports clinical initiatives to improve patient safety and medication use.
• Facilitates or assists in the medication utilization evaluation process for assigned service lines.
• Documents all clinical activities and interventions accurately and completely.
• Supports and participates in quality improvement, risk management, and patient safety programs, including National Patient Safety Goals, Core Measures, regulatory compliance, and HCAHPS medication-related initiatives.
• Prioritizes work and assists in implementing clinical process changes.
• Assists with the preparation of the pharmacy newsletter and other forms of written or electronic communication.
• Performs drug class reviews and prepares drug monographs for committee submission.
• Participates in all aspects of managing the drug formulary.
• Supports additional department functions to maintain pharmacy operations.
• Fulfills Clinical Pharmacist 1 responsibilities when needed.

Requirements

• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Proficiency in computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheet software, and pharmacy information systems.
• Interest and knowledge in pathophysiology, interpretation of diagnostic criteria, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacotherapeutics in oncology and other assigned service lines.
• Minimum of 1 year of hospital pharmacy experience AND one of the following:
  • At least 2 years of hospital pharmacy experience, OR
  • Completion of a 1-year (PGY1 or general practice) residency/fellowship, OR
  • Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS).

Qualifications

• Graduate of an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy at a college or university.
• Completion of two years of hospital pharmacy experience or an ASHP-approved pharmacy residency program.
• Licensure by the Virginia State Board of Pharmacy by examination or reciprocity.
• BLS and ACLS certification (PALS may substitute for ACLS if specializing in pediatrics).
• Doctor of Pharmacy from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy (preferred).
