Pharmacy Assistant

Description

OSDH Pharmacy functions as a repackage and wholesale distributor for OSDH Service Programs to supply county health departments and mobile units. The Pharmacy repackages medications into unit-of-issue packaging and orders, receives, stores, tracks, and distributes pharmaceutical and medical supplies for 68 County Health Departments and two independent City County Health Departments. Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities for assisting in filling prescriptions and dispensing drugs in a state institution or state warehouse.

Position Responsibilities / Essential Functions

• Assists pharmacist in filling prescriptions; uses repackaging machine; and heat sealer.
• Receives, maintains, and completes inventory reports for medical and pharmaceuticals requisitioned.
• Ensures that medications are kept separated according to 340B requirements, funding source, and OSDH program area.
• Aid pharmacist with ensuring accurate medication pricing is loaded in EHR.
• Receives, maintains, and completes inventory reports for medical and pharmaceuticals used in the treatment and management of illnesses.
• Type labels and post all information on appropriate records, including all EMR or EHR systems.
• Distribute filled and labeled prescriptions to County Health Departments.
• Ensure that drug supplies are used according to dates; remove outdated supplies from stock; assist in maintaining inventory; requisition supplies; check incoming supplies for dates, dosage and conformance with requisition.
• Assist in the monitoring of electronic temperature monitoring system, to ensure product integrity.
• Clean and maintain pharmaceutical equipment; prepare standard solutions.
• Assist and support with all pharmacy operations related duties, including pharmacy phone and email monitoring.
• Assist pharmacist with inventory management, electronic health records and any other projects.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Three years of experience as a pharmacy clerk; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting the completion of thirty semester hours of college course work for each year of the required experience.
• Valued Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Required at this level include knowledge of pharmaceutical inventory system; of basic pharmacology; of public health practices and medical terminology as applied to therapeutics, of the procedures followed in filling, labeling and distributing medical prescriptions; of the use of scales, measures and other dispensing devices; and of hospital supply procurement procedures.
• Must be able to communicate effectively to technical and non-technical audiences in both written and verbal methods; to plan, organize and prioritize time and workload to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines; create and implement training and presentations; and development of distance training methods.
• Ability is required to follow pharmacist's instructions precisely; and to complete necessary records on drug supply and issuance.
• Also, must have computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Work is typically performed in an office setting and occasionally in a warehouse environment.
• While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to talk, stand, walk and reach with hands and arms.
• This position requires periods of sitting and daily use of computer, phone, and heat sealer.
• This position may require performing moderate lifting, use a pallet jack, and push/pull a cart.
• Must be able to lift/carry 25 pounds.
