Pharmacist I (Per Diem)

About The Position

Student Health and Counseling Services provides basic medical and mental health care to CSUEB students, promoting healthy living and assisting students in attaining an optimal state of health to achieve their academic and career goals. The Pharmacist performs general licensed pharmacist work, abiding by professional policies as defined by the California Board of Pharmacy. This position functions in accordance with CSU Executive Orders, SHCS policies and procedures, and relevant state and federal laws, providing pharmaceutical services and overseeing the overall operations of the pharmacy while working independently under the direction of the Pharmacist-in-Charge.

Responsibilities

• Provide Pharmaceutical Services to Customers:
  • Compound, fill, and dispense medications.
  • Provide information to students regarding proper use of medication and consultations.
  • Consult with and advise clinicians on drug selection, dosage, and administration.
  • Provide up-to-date drug information on actions, side effects, availability, cost, and possible alternate therapies.
  • Maintain formularies, standard compendia on pharmaceuticals, and references.
  • Update drug and patient profiles.
  • Collect payment for medication(s) as needed and submit billing information electronically if applicable.
  • Provide lead work direction and instruct pharmacy technicians, helpers, clerks, students, and volunteers in processing and fulfillment of prescriptions.
  • Facilitate the sale of over-the-counter (OTC) medications.
  • Coordinate the process of appropriate medication disposal.
• Receive and Maintain Pharmaceuticals and Supplies:
  • Stock cabinet/supply of medication(s) to be dispensed by clinicians if needed.
  • Assist with immunizations as requested.
• Perform Inventory Control:
  • Maintain medications in the pharmacy formulary and keep pharmacy stocked appropriately.
  • Ensure expired medications are returned/disposed of appropriately.
  • Help monitor stock of immunizations.
  • Maintain prescription records, controlled substances inventory, DEA inventory, and all other records of dispersion as needed to comply with campus, state, and/or federal requests.
  • Help monitor inventory of medications stored outside of the pharmacy.
• Perform Administrative, Educational, Technical Tasks & Other Duties as Assigned:
  • Participate in various Health Center promotion events and/or committee meetings.
  • Participate in the adherence to policies and protocols.
  • Maintain pharmacy security.
  • Help update licensing and regulatory documentation regarding pharmacy status as needed.
  • Keep abreast of developments in the professional field.
  • Participate in continuous education to maintain licensure.

Requirements

• Knowledge:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the laws and regulations pertaining to dispensing, storage, and recordkeeping of drugs, narcotics, and poisons.
  • Thorough knowledge of all drugs, chemicals, and supplies required in the operation of the Student Health Center pharmacy.
  • Working knowledge of automated pharmacy systems and campus procurement and budgetary processes.
  • General knowledge of pharmacy administration and the requirements of serving as a Pharmacist-in-Charge.
• Abilities:
  • Ability to compound and fill prescriptions.
  • Evaluate written prescription orders to determine ingredients needed and ensure proper dosages.
  • Review patient profiles against prescriptions for potential drug interactions and allergies.
  • Serve as a resource to practitioners and other medical support staff in the areas of pharmacology, drug combination, drug interaction, and alternative drug therapies.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of pharmacy policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other health center staff and management.
  • Be sensitive to, communicate effectively with, and provide support to diverse patients.
  • Provide lead work direction to pharmacy support staff.
• Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) college of pharmacy program or other program recognized by the California State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Equivalent to one year of experience as a licensed pharmacist working independently.
• License:
  • Possess and maintain a valid pharmacist license as defined and required by the California State Board of Pharmacy.

Preferred Skills And Knowledge

• Experience working in a college or university student health center, outpatient clinic, or similarly integrated healthcare environment.
• Demonstrated ability to provide patient-centered service in a diverse educational, clinical, or institutional setting.
• Experience administering immunizations in a clinical, community, or retail pharmacy setting.
• Experience utilizing automated pharmacy dispensing systems and electronic medical record systems, including systems such as Propharm/Pharmac.
• Experience with retail pharmacy operations, including point-of-sale transactions, insurance processing, inventory management, and related pharmacy workflows.
• Knowledge of Family PACT program requirements and billing regulations.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with patients, healthcare providers, staff, and campus partners.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, coordinate competing assignments, and meet time-sensitive deadlines.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.
• Proficiency using pharmacy-related technology and standard business software applications to support clinical, operational, and administrative functions.
• Ability and willingness to attend off-site training and professional development programs as needed.

Pay

The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $63.89 per hour to $78.50 per hour.

Schedule

This is a temporary, hourly, per diem position. Employees are paid only for hours worked, and work schedules are based on department needs.

Benefits

This position is non-benefited and is not eligible for the CSU employee benefits program.
