About the role
The Retail Pharmacist at RWJBarnabas Health plays a critical role in patient care and operational excellence. Operating with a high level of independence, they ensure medications are provided safely and rationally according to legal and professional standards.
Responsibilities
- Manages the prescription workflow process, ensuring accurate data entry, insurance verification, documentation, and error-free prescription verification
- Absides by all insurance regulations and ensures only pharmacists handle professional consultations and new telephoned orders
- Evaluates critical medication issues like drug interactions and allergies using relevant clinical resources with intense attention to detail
- Operates the cash register (POS), verifies patient identities at pick-up, and manages the 14-day credit return process for the pick-up bin
- Consults professionally with physicians, nurses, and healthcare providers regarding medication therapy while delivering timely phone and customer service
- Maintains strict department security and stock integrity by adhering to CII to CV inventory controls and USP regulations
- Monitors and logs daily refrigerator and ambient room temperatures as strictly required by the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy
- Executes Cardinal Express ordering, resolves discrepancies, signs CDS invoices, and optimizes inventory levels based on shelf usage

- Utilizes downtime efficiently to file prescriptions, check for outdates, and supervise or delegate tasks to pharmacy technicians
- Completes and documents clinical comprehensive medication reviews utilizing management software platforms such as Outcomes MTM and EQuIPP
- Administers immunizations to eligible patients based on site enrollment guidelines to support community health initiatives
- Reports all medication variances, adverse drug events, and any suspected theft or diversion of controlled dangerous substances (CDS)
Requirements
- Graduate of a college of pharmacy accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education
- Holds and maintains an active Pharmacist license/registration in good standing from the State of New Jersey
- A minimum of one year’s retail pharmacy experience is recommended
Qualifications
- Flexibility to work alternating and rotating work schedules (days, early evenings, and some weekends)
- Proficiency in the use of pharmacy and other departmental software required for the position
