About the Role

The PET/CT Technologist performs all PET/CT, nuclear medicine, and diagnostic CT procedures with minimal supervision on patients as directed by the physician or radiologist.

Responsibilities

  • Administer radiopharmaceuticals intravenously.
  • Map radiopharmaceuticals using a PET/CT scanner to produce computer-generated images.
  • Perform diagnostic CT exams with the administration of intravenous contrast dye.
  • Screen patients to ensure administering contrast will not be harmful.
  • Follow exam protocols designed for administration of exams following ALARA principles.
  • Inform the Physicist of potential and actual problems concerning equipment.
  • Schedule the evaluation, maintenance, and repair for all assigned equipment.
  • Maintain equipment quality assurance, downtime, and incident report logs.
  • Investigate and report non-conformance to established treatment standards to appropriate departmental personnel.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and safety standards.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other departmental personnel to plan and implement corrective actions to improve diagnostic imaging and standards.
  • Maintain an atmosphere of caring, concern, and support for patients ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics, visitors, medical staff, and coworkers.
  • Provide safety and patient care through consistent practice of departmental procedures for imaging administration.
  • Recognize deviation from prescribed imaging delivery and report all deviations to the Chief of Radiation, Physicist, and Radiation Oncology Administrator.
  • Assure the quality of treatment delivery through complete and accurate documentation of patient records.
  • Explain procedures to patients, means of communication during exams, and procedures to follow if an emergency arises.
  • Maintain visual and audible communication with the patient during the exam.
  • Respond effectively to patient concerns.
  • Assess patient physical and emotional needs.
  • Observe patients for expected and unexpected reactions to exams and communicate this to appropriate staff members.
  • Reinforce patient education, side effect management information, and indicate non-compliance to medical/nursing staff.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly patient care/treatment room.
  • Work shifts as assigned.
  • Perform all duties as assigned by Lead Technologist/Leadership.
  • Expectation of a maximum of 12 patients per technologist.
  • Must be able to access patient ports.

Requirements

  • Ability to produce quality imaging with little supervision.
  • Maintain registration in good standing with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
  • Meet all continuing education standards as they apply to registry eligibility.
  • Computer experience with EMR knowledge.
  • Excellent work ethic, including integrity, positive attitude, productivity, organization, and respect for leadership.
  • Excellent attendance, continuous learning, and willingness to ask for help.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a detail-oriented, fast-paced setting.

Qualifications

  • ARRT certification in Nuclear Medicine Technology and Computed Tomography.
  • Arizona Licenses in Nuclear Medicine and Computed Tomography.
  • Valid CPR certification.

Working Conditions

  • Medical office setting with moderate noise levels from medical equipment.
  • Controlling machines and processes using either control mechanisms or direct physical activity.
  • Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify causes of errors or defects.
  • Ability to see details at close range.
  • Ability to listen and understand information through spoken words and sentences.
  • Ability to read and understand written information.
  • Ability to communicate information verbally so others will understand.
  • Standing for long periods of time.
  • Minimum lifting requirements of 25 pounds to transfer equipment, help patients with positioning, and pack/unpack supplies.
  • Frequent bending, twisting, and position changes to assist patients.
