Responsibilities
- Assist residents in the dining room during mealtime by distributing meals.
- Assist with cleaning the dining room after meals when required.
- Distribute facility-provided snacks to residents during evening snack time.
- Assist residents with showering/bathing as needed.
- Assist residents with maintaining a healthy hygiene routine as needed.
- Launder residents' clothing, linens, and towels as needed.
- Assist residents that require limited mobility assistance as needed.
- Answer all call bells and check residents' whereabouts during rounds.
- Assist residents with operating the elevator lift.
- Perform housekeeping and light maintenance tasks as needed (laundering residents' clothing, linens, and towels; cleaning resident rooms; making residents’ beds; unclogging toilets; adjusting room temperature; salting areas outside of facility).
- Report all pertinent information to the PCA in charge.
Medication Assistance
- Count Controlled Substances with outgoing PCA and sign initials if count is correct. Report any missing Controlled Substances to Administration.
- Prepare medication, bring medication to dining room during meal time, and assist residents with medication.
- If a resident requires medication prior to breakfast, go to the resident's room and assist with medication.
- If a resident requires afternoon or after-dinner medication, assist the resident with medication from the med room.
- For injectable medication: resident comes to the med room; PCA hands over the injectable medication; resident self-administers in the presence of the PCA; resident safely disposes of remains into the sharps container. PCA must never come into contact with or dispose of injectable medication after it has been handed to the resident.
- Always watch residents ingest medication and properly document.
- Update medication administration record as needed after physician visits and ensure MAR matches doctor's orders.
- Ensure that residents receive all necessary documents prior to doctor appointments.
- Consult and correspond with doctor offices for any necessary clarifications.
- Contact pharmacy for residents' prescription refills as needed and ensure e-script copies are received.
- Record all pertinent information regarding residents in the 24-hour Log Book.
