About the role

To provide direct and indirect patient care in the perioperative area under the guidance and direction of the registered nurse and in accordance with UMMC policy and nursing practice laws and regulations. This is an entry-level position designed for training purposes.

Responsibilities

• Performs unit secretary duties, including telephone duties, appropriate message taking, and related tasks.
• Demonstrates an understanding of the principles of Perioperative practice (aseptic technique, infection control, traffic patterns, patient safety).
• Assists the RN in the care of the patient (lifting, turning, repositioning the patient, utilizing proper body mechanics and equipment).
• Understands the importance of National Patient Safety Goals (specifically related to patient identification) when escorting or transporting patients and equipment to various hospital locations, as required.
• Routinely handles highly-technical service-specific equipment (microscopes, lasers, video equipment) with an understanding of operational function, safety, cleaning, and maintenance.
• Assembles, cleans, prepares, and/or moves equipment as directed.
• Demonstrates an understanding of appropriate specimen handling, including packaging, preservatives, tracking, and regulatory compliance. Delivers specimens, cultures, and/or labs to appropriate locations within acceptable time frames as directed.
• Acts as a liaison with hospital Biomedical Department.
• Assists in room turnover (cleaning and hazardous material disposal).
• Assists with restocking, cleaning, and maintaining supplies in the pre- and post-operative areas.
• Assists the RN in the care of the patient (obtaining vital signs, EKGs, Urine Pregnancy Tests, Accu-checks, and other duties as assigned).
• Monitors and maintains oxygen cylinders to ensure the pre- and post-operative areas have the appropriate supply needed for patient care.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
• One (1) year of experience in a healthcare-related occupation preferred, or completion of the first semester of an RN/LPN program preferred.
• Employees entering this job class may apply for Periop Hospital Tech II with 6 months of experience or completion of a certification program (such as the Certified Surgical Tech Cleaner).

Schedule

• Full time (100% FTE).
• Rotating work shift.

Pay

• Hourly pay class.
• Non-exempt FLSA designation.
