Perfusionist (Full-Time)

About the Role

As assigned by the Director of Perfusion Services and under the direction of the primary surgeon, the perfusionist sets up and operates devices such as the heart-lung machine for bypass procedures, ventricular assist devices, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and the autotransfusion device. The perfusionist also provides surgical backup for procedures performed in the catheterization lab.

Responsibilities

• Under the guidelines of the primary surgeon, conducts cardiopulmonary bypass safely in accordance with the department's policy and procedures and the standard accepted practices of the American Society of Extracorporeal Technology and the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
• Ensures all routine and emergency cases are performed according to Policy and Procedure.
• Reviews patient's medical record prior to each procedure to assess the scope of disease/illness and make appropriate judgments concerning prime selection, additional fluid choices, drug usage during bypass, and techniques of conducting bypass.
• Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to provide extracorporeal services to patients from adult to geriatric, making appropriate changes to equipment, supplies, and techniques to meet patient needs and policy requirements.
• Maintains readiness to initiate bypass throughout the procedure, completing and recording baseline activated clotting time, baseline blood gases, baseline Cerebral Oximetry data, the autotransfusion checklist, and the pre-bypass checklist.
• Under the guidelines of the primary surgeon, makes appropriate responses to the patient's medical status when using the intra-aortic balloon pump, auto-transfusion, and ventricular assist devices, recording all responses appropriately.
• Communicates with the surgeon and the anesthesiologist throughout the procedure regarding the patient's condition.
• Monitors anticoagulation, acid-base balance, hemodynamics, Cerebral Oximetry, hemodilution, and homeostasis, keeping all parameters within acceptable limits set by department policy.
• Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies care accordingly (e.g., age, culture, language, hearing or visual impairments), communicating at the patient's developmental/educational level.
• Performs point-of-care blood gas analysis, including patient blood gas analysis, electronic and liquid quality controls, data management, and result reporting.
• Performs Hemostasis Management utilizing the Medtronic Plus Hemostasis Management System, including patient blood samples, quality controls, data management, and result reporting.
• Completes patient records using the department's computerized system, including the perfusion record, required checklists, the cardiac surgery database, and billing forms.
• Provides coverage at affiliate and partnership locations when requested.
• Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

• High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
• A minimum of a degree in perfusion technology, other related science, or equivalent.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

• 3 years of clinical perfusion experience.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

• Perfusionist License or NJ Perfusionist Temporary License.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

• Certified in Cardiovascular Perfusion.

Pay

The starting rate of pay is provided for informational purposes only and is not a guarantee of a specific offer. The minimum base pay for this role is $183,664.00 annually. Posted rates may vary based on labor market data, experience, education, certifications, skills, geographic location, internal equity, budget, and grant funding.

Full-time and part-time (20+ hours/week) positions are eligible for a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, vision, paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and retirement benefits.
