About the role

The Performing Arts Technician I supports production design, technical implementation, and maintenance for theatrical and performing arts events at Grand Central and the Arena Theatre. This position collaborates with faculty and production staff to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of performances.

Responsibilities

  • Affords support during load-in, setup, rehearsals, performances, strike, and post-production activities.
  • Assists with implementing scenic, lighting, sound, rigging, and projection elements.
  • Operates production equipment as assigned.
  • Supports scenic construction and installation.
  • Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs of theatrical equipment.
  • Supports inventory management and organization of tools and materials.
  • Supports ordering and tracking of production supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Completion of professional training or relevant college coursework, along with practical experience.
  • A minimum of one year of experience working for a theater, repertory, or stock company in a relevant production specialty, such as costume construction, stage and set construction, lighting production, or sound and audio production.
  • Working knowledge of design principles and the ability to translate design specifications, blueprints, or drawings into applicable costumes, scenery, lighting, and sound production.
  • Ability to identify and acquire the appropriate materials and supplies needed for projects, as well as manage material budgets for specific production specialties and projects.
  • Foundational knowledge of relevant software packages for the production specialty.
  • General knowledge of historical periods as they relate to the production specialty.
  • Background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment.

Qualifications

  • Competition of professional training or applicable college coursework and practical experience.
  • A minimum of one year of experience working for a theater, repertory, or stock company engaged in the applicable production specialty such as costume construction, stage and set construction, lighting production, and/or sound and audio production.
  • Working knowledge of design principles and the ability to translate design specifications, blueprints, or drawings into applicable costumes, scenery, lighting, and sound production.
  • Ability to identify and appropriate materials and supplies needed for projects and manage materials budgets for production specialty and specific projects.
  • Foundational knowledge of applicable software packages for the production specialty.

Pay

$21.47 - $31.27 per hour (Hiring range depending on qualifications, not anticipated to exceed $21.47 - $25.15 per hour)

Schedule

Intermittent, on an as-needed hourly basis, based on departmental needs. This is a temporary, intermittent position ending on or before June 30, 2027, with the possibility of annual renewal contingent upon available funding and program needs. Hours will not exceed 1,000 per fiscal year. This is a non-benefited position.
