About the role

The Southern Recreation & Leisure Services Division of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) seeks passionate and dynamic Performing Arts Instructors and Aides to lead engaging instructional programs in dance, theater, and/or music for participants of all ages. The ideal candidate will inspire creativity, confidence, and collaboration while fostering artistic expression and cultural appreciation. This role supports a mission to cultivate cultural enrichment and personal growth through the performing arts.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver age-appropriate performing arts classes and workshops for community participants.
  • Teach core principles of dance, theater, and/or music performance, including technique, stage presence, and ensemble collaboration.
  • Design lesson plans that integrate creativity, movement, storytelling, and cultural diversity.
  • Foster an inclusive and supportive environment that encourages self-expression and teamwork.
  • Collaborate with parents, recreation staff, and community partners to ensure program goals align with participant needs and interests.
  • Manage class logistics, including attendance tracking, equipment setup, and safety compliance.
  • Evaluate student progress through observation, feedback, and performance assessments.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Associates degree in Performing Arts, Theater, Music, Dance, Education, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred).
  • Minimum of two years of teaching or performance experience in the performing arts.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to adapt to lessons for diverse learning styles and abilities.
  • Experience working in recreation, community arts, or youth development settings preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).

Qualifications

  • Aides must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Instructors must be at least 21 years of age.

Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of relevant software and technology tools.

Benefits

This position is Seasonal/part-time. This position is not eligible for benefits. Must successfully pass a complete background investigation.

Supplemental Information

May be subject to medical, drug and alcohol testing. Work Environment Instruction takes place in classrooms, makerspaces, community centers, and outdoor learning environments. Instructors must be comfortable with hands-on teaching and flexible learning formats. Work location may vary based on need.
