Primary Responsibilities

  • Performing all duties in the Mohs lab, independently embedding, cutting, staining, freezing and mounting
  • Preparing slides for examination by the Mohs Surgeon
  • Properly identifying and cataloging patient specimens
  • Prepping tissues acquired during the surgical procedure for frozen sectioning
  • Freeze tissues to the condition suitable for embedding & cutting
  • Operating a cryostat to cut tissue sections for slides
  • Mounting tissues to properly affix to glass slides or Staining slides, as per specifically designed protocol
  • File and catalog slides and specimen documentation
  • Documenting equipment daily maintenance and performance
  • Complying with Kelsey-Seybold standards to meet or exceed CLIA & OSHA laboratory regulations

Mohs Surgery Lab Technician

  • Maintains the same hours as the Mohs Surgeon
  • Performs patient care duties such as injection of Lidocaine for local anesthesia in superficial areas, surgical site scrub, vital signs, preparation and procedural set up for dry dressings, sterile fields set up for MOHS procedure, suture removal up to 10 cm, documentation of all medications and procedures, knows how to access the designated resource MD or RN, seeks clarification or guidance with questions related to medication administration from licensed staff, transport patient within facility as needed, performs CPR as needed and assist during times of emergency, selects appropriate module(s) as listed below (keep the same detail from CMA II Job description)

Patient Care

  • Absorbs and anticipates the needs of the surgeon
  • Aids the Mohs surgeon throughout procedure with instruments and providing hands-on assistance according to prescribed standards
  • Dresses and provides wound care instruction for the surgery site
  • Aids with Cosmetic procedures, such as Botox, Chemical Peels, etc.
  • Able to assist with Laser skin procedures
  • Compiles and prepares surgical packs
  • Runs autoclave as needed. Documents observations related to health status and reports findings
  • Takes photos of surgical stages for Epic System-Haiku Application during Surgical procedure

Scribe

  • Facilitates patient flow through ambulatory clinics and ensures an accurate and complete medical record for each patient
  • Prepares and assembles medical record documentation/chart for physician prior to and during patient visit
  • Aids the medical provider by accompanying them during the surgical procedure

Clerical

  • Reviews doctor's schedule, abstract as needed; prints PVS for each patient and requests other relevant information needed for patient's visit that day
  • Prepares and submits patient documents for scanning
  • Monitors assigned in-basket and completes work as needed - Overdue Results/Letters
  • Schedules appointments and assists patients with specialty referrals and radiology testing
  • Provides pre-printed patient educational material as directed by provider
  • Ensures proper disposal of confidential patient information - daily
  • Follows HIPAA policy and procedures regarding patient confidentiality

Department Maintenance

  • Maintains supplies, medications and forms and notifies appropriate staff when reorder needed
  • Removes and tags broken equipment and notifies coordinator, supervisor, or manager
  • Cleans exam rooms daily and documents on log
  • Maintains supplies for expiration date and restocks to par levels
  • Performs sterilization of instruments and completes logs (assignment based on completion of sterilization class and delegation by appropriate nursing staff)
  • Attends staff meetings
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area with a minimum of personal items

QA-Regulatory

  • Completes daily logs as assigned by nursing staff
  • Waived testing (i.e., glucometer, urine dipstick and urine pregnancy logs)
  • CLIA standards
  • Refrigerator and room temperature logs
  • Eye wash station
  • Other QA logs
  • Completes accurate, legal, & ethical documentation
  • Maintains patient confidentiality
  • Practices OSHA safety standards with proper disposal of biohazard waste
  • Uses frequent hand washing or hand sanitizer (up to ten times before have to wash hands with soap and water unless hands visibly soiled) to prevent and control the spread of disease within the clinical setting
  • Uses gloves and PPE as needed
  • Uses aseptic or sterile technique as needed
  • Verifies that equipment has a current PM label before use
  • Identifies and reports potential barriers for the safe provision of patient care and maintains a safe patient environment

  • Works with patients to achieve excellent customer service and high levels of satisfaction
  • Practices mutual respect among all members of the healthcare team
  • Works with other staff to promote an efficient and effective healthcare team

  • Mets both Clinic and individual Customer Service goals and standards by maintaining 90% or greater of excellence in customer service

Financial

  • Demonstrates prudent use of resources. Minimizes wasteful actions
  • Aids in maintaining equipment according to manufacturer's recommendation
  • Reports to coordinator, supervisor, manager, or clinic administrator the need for over-time and obtains approval

Quality Improvement

  • Contributes and participates in the department and clinic process improvement plans. (PDSA)
  • Supports initiatives related to meeting AAAHC and other accrediting standards
  • Follows all safety standards for patients, employees, and visitors
  • Recognizes and adheres to National Patient Safety Goals
