About the role
The Pharmacist interprets physicians' prescriptions and compounds and dispenses medications within regulatory guidelines. This position supervises the clinical activities of pharmacy technicians, consults and counsels patients regarding medication use and potential drug interactions, and handles complex problem resolution. The role is categorized as compliance critical, requiring continual adherence to all division, corporate, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate, prepare, and dispense medications while verifying prescriptions according to professional standards, facility procedures, and state and federal legal requirements.
- Perform medication reconciliation processes to extend a seamless continuum of care for patients upon discharge.
- Ensure a focus on excellent customer service and clinical care.
- Consult with patients regarding medications, including dosage, frequency, specialized requirements, and possible drug interactions.
- Interact closely with patients to address all questions or concerns about their medication therapy.
- Review and evaluate patient plans of care for therapeutic appropriateness.
- Participate in achieving business goals and metrics for the ambulatory pharmacy, including assisting in marketing events and promotions.
- Assist in the fiscal management of the ambulatory pharmacy to optimize profits and control expenses.
- Manage functions for ambulatory pharmacy technicians, including hiring, training, terminating, and performance management.
- Monitor overall performance of pharmacy staff to ensure compliance with regulatory and organizational policies.
- Maintain and execute procedures concerning quality improvement, quality assurance, security of controlled substances, and record keeping.
- Submit, review, and handle adjudicated prescription claims to ensure appropriateness of reimbursement and follow up on inappropriate claims.
- Establish, supervise, and maintain pricing tables and related pricing structures.
- Make recommendations to improve operating procedures or facilitate patient care.
- Perform prescription verification and provide technical guidance to pharmacy technicians.
- Respond promptly to patient inquiries, requests, and escalated issues, ensuring outstanding concerns are resolved.
- Provide consultation on pharmacy and therapeutic matters to organizational personnel.
- Assist in daily reporting and scheduling of pharmacy technicians, including managing sick time, vacation, personal, and holiday time.
- Supervise activities related to patient profiles and contacts, ensuring updates for insurance verification and regulatory compliance.
- Participate in departmental meetings and in-service training for pharmacy technicians.
- Collaborate with organizational personnel on quality, satisfaction, service excellence, and clinical care.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science Degree or Pharm.D. from an accredited School of Pharmacy.
- Current, unrestricted pharmacist license through the appropriate state board of pharmacy.
- Broad training and/or experience in business administration, sales, marketing, information technology, and retail/ambulatory pharmacy.
- Zero to three years of directly related and progressively responsible retail/ambulatory care pharmacy experience.
