About the role
The Per Diem School Nurse works under the direction of the School Nurse Supervisor, providing skilled nursing in both the school and home settings. This role involves administering first aid, conducting screenings, and visiting homes to monitor children with chronic illnesses.
Responsibilities
- Develops a plan of care for students to maximize their educational benefits while meeting their health needs.
- Participates in community health programs.
- Practices Universal Precautions and follows techniques for preventing exposure to harmful substances.
- Evaluates medical histories, socioeconomic statuses, and physical conditions of children.
- Conducts physical examinations and screenings, including vision and hearing tests.
- Serves as a liaison between educational and medical professionals, particularly regarding special education placements and Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs).
- Supervises health aids and volunteers in the nurses' office.
- Collaborates with occupational and physical therapists in caring for disabled children.
- Assists school social workers in addressing the needs of families dealing with difficult life situations.
- Engages in orientation, teaching, and supervision of other nursing and ancillary staff.
- Enters all relevant information into the SNAP Software System.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Graduate of a National League for Nursing-approved school of nursing with at least two years of registered nursing experience within the last five years.
- RN licensure by the State of Connecticut.
- Able to perform manual tasks, walk up and down stairs, drive a vehicle, and maintain hearing and vision necessary for conversations and nursing duties.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, physicians, school health aides, and other school personnel.
- Free from addictive habits.
- A team player.
Qualifications
- Minimum of two years of registered nursing experience within the past five years.
- Graduate of a National League for Nursing-approved school of nursing.
- Current RN licensure by the State of Connecticut.
