Housing Works was founded in 1990 with a long-term commitment to AIDS advocacy. The organization established New York State’s first harm reduction-based, OASAS-licensed outpatient drug treatment program. Other services include Health Home care management, behavioral health, and syringe exchange programs. A pioneer in the social entrepreneurship movement, Housing Works operates 10 high-end thrift shops in Manhattan and Brooklyn and a much-loved Bookstore Cafe in Soho.

About the role

The Residential Aide (RA) ensures the wellbeing and safety of the program’s clients and staff during their shifts. The RA provides crisis intervention as needed to maintain residential safety and security.

Schedule

  • Shifts: 8am–4pm, 4pm–12am, 12am–8am (may vary by ±1 hour depending on residence assignment)
  • Alternate shifts: 12am–12pm or 12pm–12am
  • Operates 7 days a week, including all holidays as needed

Responsibilities

  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Work with the homeless population
  • Obtain a Certificate of Fitness for Supervision of Fire-Alarm Systems (S-95) within eighty (80) days of employment
  • Complete annual compliance training within 30 days
  • Use PPE provided by Housing Works during shift when required by Housing Works Policies and Procedures
  • Dependable and flexible
  • Excellent internal and external customer service skills and strong interpersonal skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, including ability to communicate with all levels of management
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Collaborate with colleagues to solve problems
  • Ensure the safety, security, and integrity of all residents, guests, and the physical environment of the facility
  • Conduct periodic facility walk-throughs
  • Provide excellent customer service and maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Communicate with clinical staff regarding resident behavior and care of those on the fragile list
  • Screen all visitors, staff, and clients entering the facility according to Housing Works’ requirements
  • Write and submit Shift Reports at the end of every shift

  • At least one year of work experience

Pay

$18/hour

This position is included in a bargaining unit represented by the Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). Terms and conditions of employment may be covered by a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between Housing Works and RWDSU.
