Per Diem Radiation Therapist I, Radiation Oncology

Major Responsibilities

• Administers radiation therapy to patients following established standards, practices, and guidelines.
• Checks prescription, diagnosis, chart and patient-identification prior to treatment.
• Explains procedure to patient as means of communication during treatment.
• Answers questions and reassures patient.
• Reinforces physician’s advice to patient regarding reactions to treatment and to care.
• Prepares room and equipment for patient according to chart specifications for field size, distance, time, and the like.
• Administers radiation therapy treatments observing radiation safety measures for patients and personnel.
• Transfers patient safety to treatment table, giving special care to catheters, I.V.’s, and the like.
• Maintains patient markings.
• Maintains simulation room.
• Affixes assists Radiation (Oncologist) and Physicist in simulation of patients prior to radiation treatments.
• Observes patient for unusual reactions and reports to supervisor or others.
• Affixes assists in follow-up and clinical examinations of patient.
• Maintains departmental records.
• Updates patient charts as required.
• Maintains records of daily treatment.
• Maintains separate files on all therapy patients.
• Schedules patient appointments.
• Affixes in care and maintenance of facilities, equipment and supplies.
• Maintains work area in clean, orderly and safe condition.
• Maintains equipment in good working order; makes minor repairs as necessary.
• Reports any hazardous conditions or equipment breakdown immediately to supervisor or others.
• Initiates requisitions for supplies as needed.

Position Qualifications

• Must be registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiation Therapy. If not registered upon hire, the employee will have 1 year to obtain certification as a condition of continued employment.
• Must possess a valid Massachusetts license in Radiation Therapy.
• Graduate of JRCERT-approved or CAHEA-approved Radiation Therapy Technology Program.
• Demonstrated clinical knowledge.
• Effective verbal and written communication skill.
• Excellent customer service skills and ability to work cooperatively with all members of the healthcare team.
