About the Role
The Lab Associate obtains blood and non-blood specimens from patients, ensuring accurate collection and proper processing. They verify test requisitions, assemble equipment, and perform venipuncture, finger, or heel sticks while maintaining patient safety and comfort. The role involves processing specimens, performing waived or moderate complexity tests, troubleshooting lab instruments, and adhering to quality control procedures. Additionally, they may handle clerical tasks, greet patients, and assist with training new staff or interns. The position emphasizes safety protocols, effective communication, and teamwork.
Responsibilities
- Collect blood and non-blood specimens following standard procedures
- Verify and document patient and specimen information
- Perform specimen accessioning and testing procedures
- Maintain laboratory safety, cleanliness, and supply stock
- Contribute to laboratory functions, attend training, and support team collaboration
- Perform clerical tasks and assist with specimen processing as needed
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Preferred: Phlebotomy certification, training, or experience
- Knowledge of medical terminology and lab systems (LIS, EMR)
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Customer service orientation and interpersonal skills
- Ability to draw specimens across all age groups
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred
