About the Role

The City of Peoria is seeking a Utility System Operator I to join our Water Production team. This position is responsible for operating and maintaining the city's water production facilities, ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of potable water to residents and businesses.

Responsibilities

• Operate, monitor, and maintain water treatment and distribution systems, including pumps, valves, and chemical feed equipment.
• Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs on water production equipment and facilities.
• Monitor and adjust water treatment processes to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
• Collect and analyze water samples for quality control and regulatory reporting.
• Respond to emergency situations, such as main breaks, equipment failures, or water quality issues.
• Maintain accurate logs, records, and reports of operations, maintenance, and water quality data.
• Assist in the development and implementation of standard operating procedures for water production.
• Operate and maintain SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems for remote monitoring and control of water facilities.
• Participate in training and professional development opportunities to stay current with industry standards and best practices.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• One (1) year of experience in water treatment, distribution, or a related field.
• Valid Arizona Class D driver’s license.
• Ability to obtain an Arizona Grade 1 Water Treatment Operator certification within one (1) year of employment.
• Basic computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office and SCADA systems.
• Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and respond to after-hours emergencies.
• Physical ability to perform tasks such as lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, and working in confined spaces.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate degree or certification in Water Technology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
• Arizona Grade 1 Water Treatment Operator certification or higher.
• Experience with water treatment plant operations, including chemical dosing, filtration, and disinfection processes.
• Familiarity with Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) regulations and reporting requirements.

Pay

$20.50 - $25.50 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

Schedule

• Full-time position with rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• On-call availability for emergency response.
