Utility Worker I (Water)

About the role

The City of Fulton owns a municipal water system serving approximately 5,000 customers. The system includes six deep wells, eight booster pumps, three elevated towers, three ground storage facilities, and a network of approximately 90 miles of distribution mains. The elevated towers have a storage capacity of 1.5 million gallons, and the ground storage facilities have a capacity of 3.06 million gallons.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with ongoing water line operations.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs water and sewer pipelines, taps, valves, meter services, fire hydrants, and manholes.
  • Evacuates and shores trenches, backfills, cuts, patches, repairs, and resurfaces streets.

Requirements

  • Must pass pre-employment drug testing and submit to periodic drug testing as required by applicable laws.
  • May be required to work weekends or a variety of shifts.
  • Subject to emergency call-in.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Must have no felony convictions.
  • Must have a valid CDL (A or B) Drivers' License or must take and pass, at minimum, the written portion of the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) exam (permit) within 90 days of hire.
  • Must obtain a class "B" CDL at a minimum within the 6-month probationary period.

Qualifications

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of the operation/maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment with both standard and automatic transmissions.
  • Accurately document and maintain simple records and logs as well as brief reports.
  • Communicate effectively verbally.
  • Deal effectively and courteously with associates and the general public.
  • Perform effectively as a member of a team in carrying out the City's stated mission and philosophy.
  • Present an overall professional image.
  • Perform the essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of self or others.
