Peer Tutors (CAPS)

About the role

Holyoke Community College is housed on a multi-million-dollar, 135-acre campus equipped with state-of-the-art technology in specialized learning facilities. It serves over 9,000 students annually and offers a variety of recreational and cultural activities for both students and the community.

Responsibilities

• Support HCC students in high-risk courses through weekly study sessions.
• Help students interpret course content by breaking down complex concepts into simpler terms.
• Model or teach study skills, time management, note-taking, and test-taking.
• Work with students on a one-to-one or small-group basis to provide individualized attention.
• Understand a student’s learning style and adapt the tutoring session accordingly.
• Teach students how to learn independently and encourage them to take ownership of their learning.
• Keep track of the student’s progress and maintain accurate records with detailed notes on the student’s performance.
• Guide students on integrating information technology within the given area.
• Assist students with disabilities by identifying appropriate assistive technology tools and providing instruction on how to use them.
• Communicate with the instructor to review tutorial services and provide feedback on the student’s progress.
• Explore online tutoring resources and provide guidance on how to use them.
• Communicate with other resources for assistance, such as ESL staff, Math and Writing Coordinators, and provide collaborative support.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled as a HCC student in good standing or recent HCC alum, without a Bachelor's degree.
• Have completed the specific course you want to support, earning at least a B+.
• Basic computer skills and Google apps (training will be provided).
• Good communication, active listening, patience, empathy, teamwork, conflict resolution, and collaboration skills.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalency.
• One (1) to Two (2) semesters as a college student.
• Ability to work well with a diverse student population.

Skills

• Proficiency in the software used for instruction.
• Ability to use assistive technology tools.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Knowledge of online tutoring resources.

• Peer I: $15.00 per hour
• Peer II: $17.00 per hour

Schedule

• Part-Time, Non-Benefited Position (up to 18.5 hrs./week)
