Peer Tutor
About the role
Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution serving the Hampton Roads region. Peer tutors assist students in achieving academic success through regular tutoring sessions.
Responsibilities
- Provide academic tutoring through face-to-face and Zoom appointments, with sessions lasting no longer than 1 hour each.
- Work with the tutoring coordinator to create a tutoring schedule that does not conflict with their class schedule.
- Exchange contact information with tutees to facilitate scheduling changes.
- Report any schedule changes to the tutoring coordinator at least 24 hours in advance.
- Communicate with the tutoring coordinator regarding tutee absences and tardiness, and address any additional issues.
- Attend scheduled training sessions and meetings.
- Maintain records of student contacts and appointment statistics.
- Assist students with disabilities and specific learning needs with patience and understanding.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled as a student at Virginia Peninsula Community College.
- Show proficiency in the subject area(s) in which they tutor.
- Have good academic standing.
- Display strong communication skills.
- Be reliable with a good attendance record.
Special Assignments
May be required to assist the agency or state government in emergencies.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
- Faculty referral by an instructor in the subject area.
Additional Considerations
- Operation of a State Vehicle is not required.
- No supervision of employees.
- Minimal travel is required.
Pay and Schedule
- Pay rate: $15/hr.
- Schedule: M-F, hours vary between 8am to 5pm, up to 20 hours per week.
