Nature of Work
The role is to support others in recovery from a substance use disorder. Serves as a role model, mentor, advocate and motivator to recovering individuals in order to help prevent relapse and promote long-term recovery. Must demonstrate an ability to share personal recovery experiences and develop authentic peer-to-peer relationships. A key element that enhances and distinguishes this position is that the candidate appropriately highlights their personal experience of recovery.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalency (GED).
- Preference will be given to applicants with an Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college or university, especially in the human services field.
- Must provide personal statement describing what skills and abilities he/she has to offer
- Must have a minimum of two years of recovery from a substance use or co-occurring disorder. One year acceptable with a letter from a treatment professional who has personal knowledge of the individual
- Complete peer specialist core training, peer counselor or comparable training program from a recognized and approved source within 18 months of entry into position
- Able to maintain effective peer recovery relationships with clients
- No current criminal justice system involvement. Considerations: Length of time since last conviction, type of crime
- Must have own vehicle available for travel
- Must have a current Maryland driver’s license with a clear driving record
Desired or Preferred Qualifications
- Very strong time management, organizational, and written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work independently and on a team
- An understanding of Anne Arundel County resources
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, Excel and electronic medical records
