About the role
The Peer Support Counselor plays a crucial role in improving mental healthcare by leveraging personal lived experience and expertise to support clients.
Responsibilities
- Provide outreach and engagement to program clients, focusing on those aged 18 and older.
- Offer support, advocacy, and direct services to clients, helping them move towards recovery and meaningful roles in their lives.
- Serve as role models and companions to clients, assisting them in accessing necessary resources and services.
- Support clients in receiving mental health services, case management, and assistance with finding permanent housing.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSET, etc.)
- One year of full-time experience providing non-professional, consumer-directed services in a mental health, health care, or social services agency.
- Successful completion of Peer Support Specialist Certification within one year of employment.
- Valid California Driver's License
- First Aid certification from qualified agencies.
Qualifications
- Personal experience as a consumer in the child welfare, probation, or mental health systems.
Skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience working with individuals in the mental health, social service, or justice systems.
- Ability to build trust and rapport with clients.
- Knowledge of community resources and services.
