Duties and responsibilities

  • Outreach: Participate in community outreach and participant recruitment including implementing outreach strategies, collaborating with community partners, and assisting with social media strategies.
  • Client enrollment and screening: Complete enrollment protocol with clients; and screen for behavioral health and other needs using the screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) model.
  • Facilitate evidence-based models depending on client interest and need: These include an in-home testing model, PrEP initiation model, and peer navigation services to support individual clients, which may include providing referrals, education, and service coordination.
  • Group support and education: Assist with organizing and facilitating group educational programming and support groups.
  • Client Retention: Work to re-engage clients who have been lost to follow-up through outreach and trying to reach client contacts. Assist clients to resolve barriers to re-engagement.
  • Aid in the implementation of trainings on LGBTQ+-related topics for community groups.
  • Provide HIV/STI/Hepatitis C testing in the community.
  • Participate in related trainings on topics such as peer outreach, motivational enhancement, case management, and medical care.
  • Document all activities provided as required by the program funder.
  • Integrate as part of the RAIN outreach team, attending and assisting with events and promoting the P2P program and related RAIN programming.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma and 3 years' experience or a college degree and 1 year of experience.
  • Relevant experience may include a combination of paid and volunteer work including direct client services, teaching or community education, community organizing, and administrative work.

Supervisory relationships

  • The peer navigator will be supervised by the Lead Navigator, Lee Buncum (Duke University), the Research Project Manager, and the Director of Outreach at RAIN.

Skills and knowledge required

  • Have personal and lived experiences in the population being served which may include HIV, LGBTQ+, recovery, mental health, and/or communities of color.
  • Have strong interpersonal communication skills as well as oral and written communication skills;
  • Be familiar with community resources;
  • Be able to build rapport and relationships quickly with a variety of people including clients, therapists, medical care providers, and other service providers;
  • Be able to work independently, be self-motivated;
  • Demonstrate creative problem-solving skills in real world settings.

Travel and other special conditions

  • Local community travel is required for this position.
  • This position will need to travel to community organizations, meet clients within the community, and attend community meetings.
  • Local travel may be accomplished by bus or private car.
