Pediatric Ophthalmologist

About the role

MaineHealth’s Department of Surgery is seeking a pediatric ophthalmologist to join a well-established pediatric ophthalmology practice in Portland, Maine. The practice is currently located within a private multispecialty ophthalmology practice in Portland, close to MaineHealth’s flagship hospital, Maine Medical Center. NICU screenings and inpatient consultations are provided at Maine Medical Center, and outpatient surgeries are performed at a nearby satellite 10-room multi-specialty ASC in Scarborough, ME.

MaineHealth is looking for an applicant who will be the future of this practice as the current ophthalmologist prepares to retire at the end of 2028. Ideal start time would be August 2027.

Responsibilities

• Work side by side with the current pediatric ophthalmologist, who has 33 years of experience treating children and adults with strabismus and has built a thriving practice with an excellent reputation.
• Provide NICU screenings and inpatient consultations at Maine Medical Center.
• Perform outpatient surgeries at a nearby satellite ASC in Scarborough, ME.
• Participate in ROP screening.
• Provide direction in the future growth of the practice.
• Teach occasional medical students and pre-residency fellows as part of a Tufts University School of Medicine faculty appointment (Assistant Professor).
• Share light call volume with other ophthalmologists in the multispecialty practice.

Requirements

• Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
• Completion of a United States fellowship training program in Pediatric Ophthalmology.

Practice Details

• Wide referral base including pediatricians, family practitioners, optometrists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, geneticists, pediatric rheumatologists, and other pediatric subspecialists, serving a population of 250-300 thousand people.
• Current provider sees approximately 1,600 new patients, 6,000 total patient visits, and performs over 300 surgical procedures per year.
• Dedicated exam lanes for children and strabismus measurement, with access to visual field testing, ophthalmic photography, corneal topography, and other state-of-the-art testing equipment.
• Collaborative environment with private practice ophthalmologists specializing in retina, cataract, refractive surgery, glaucoma, oculoplastics, and emergency hospital consultation services.
• Strong and collaborative team of COAs, support staff, and OR staff.

Pay

The annual base salary for this position is $400,000. Total compensation packages may include recruitment payments, relocation assistance, productivity incentives, and quality incentives based on eligibility.
