About the Role

The NICU Patient Care Technician serves as a unit clerk, handling telephone communications, screening and verifying visitors, and completing clerical tasks. Responsibilities include stocking department supplies, maintaining par levels, cleaning designated NICU equipment and unit-specific areas, and adapting to fluctuating workloads due to volume and acuity changes. The PCT may also provide non-licensed patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse and may be floated to other areas of Children's Hospital or utilized as a sitter.

Responsibilities

  • Answer telephones and screen/verify visitors entering the unit.
  • Complete clerical responsibilities as required.
  • Stock department supplies and maintain par levels.
  • Clean designated NICU equipment and unit-specific areas.
  • Adapt to constantly changing workloads related to increased volume and acuity.
  • Perform non-licensed patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • May be floated to other areas of Children's Hospital or utilized as a sitter.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (or meet one of the preferred education criteria).
  • BLS certification completed prior to starting in the unit/department and maintained thereafter.
  • Must successfully complete an Erlanger fundamentals checklist, observed demonstration, and pass a written exam (unless grandfathered in as a PCT prior to 3-1-2004).

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred:

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the State of Tennessee.
  • First Responder certification.
  • EMT certification.
  • Nursing student who has completed Fundamentals of Nursing.
  • Medical Assistant certification.
  • Pre-Med student.
  • Military Corpsman.
  • Combat Life Saver or Combat Medic certification.
  • Surgical Technician certification.

Those with any of the above preferred qualifications may work in a Patient Care Technician position but must function within the outlined guidelines, skills, and pay grade for the role.

Schedule

Standard hours; temporary position.
