About the Role
The Patient Care Technician at Erlanger Health Systems provides direct and/or indirect care to patients under the delegation and supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role is essential in the emergency room, assisting medical and nursing staff with tasks such as phlebotomy, EKG, procedure set-up and cleaning, and patient care for a diverse patient population.
The employee must demonstrate the ability to recognize signs and symptoms requiring further evaluation by a licensed nurse, communicate effectively with customers and team members, and adapt easily to change.
Education
Required: High School Diploma or equivalent, or meet one of the preferred qualifications.
Preferred: Active certification in one of the following:
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the State of Tennessee
- First Responder
- EMT
- Nursing student having completed Fundamentals of Nursing
- Medical Assistant
- Pre-Med student
- Military Corpsman
- Combat Life Saver or Combat Medic
- Surgical Technician
Those employed as a Patient Care Technician prior to March 1, 2004, without the above educational requirements are grandfathered into the role. All others must successfully complete an Erlanger fundamentals checklist, observed demonstration, and pass a written exam.
Requirements
- BLS certification completed prior to starting in the unit/department and maintained thereafter
- De-escalation training/certification (e.g., CPI) within 6 months of hire and maintained ongoing
Preferred Certifications: One or more of the following: CNA, Medical Assistant, EMT, First Responder, Combat Medic, Combat Life Saver, Military Corpsman.
Responsibilities
- Assist medical and nursing staff with phlebotomy, EKG, procedure set-up, and cleaning
- Provide patient care for a broad patient population in the emergency room
- Exercise judgment to identify signs and symptoms requiring further evaluation by a licensed nurse
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and team members
- Adapt to changing priorities and workflows in a fast-paced environment
