About the role
Western State Hospital is seeking part-time Psychiatric Care Techs for the Learning Center to provide direct patient care by helping residents carry out activities of daily living in a safe, therapeutic environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide quality care as part of an interdisciplinary team
- Maintain accountability in a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment
- Create healthy interpersonal interactions on adult acute admissions, geriatric, and extended rehabilitation service units
- Observe and report feedback regarding interventions, treatments, behaviors, physical and emotional wellbeing, and other situations
- Document and communicate Monday through Friday (8:45 A.M. – 3:15 P.M.)
- Demonstrate knowledge of recovery/trauma-informed care
- Appropriately intervene in crisis or problem situations
- Provide direction and assistance to psychiatric patients in activities of daily living
- Perform infection prevention and control practices and apply standards in daily activities
- Perform repetitious walking and/or standing, bending, lifting, reaching, positioning, restraining, transferring, transporting, and/or escorting individuals
- Assist with activities of daily living
- Work overtime due to staffing emergencies in a 24-hour, 7-day-per-week psychiatric hospital, which may include working a 16-hour shift if necessary
- Complete all annual competency training, including TOVA III with physical restraints
- Maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers with the American Heart Association
- If a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), maintain certification in good standing with the Virginia State Board of Nursing
Requirements
- Ability to provide direct psychiatric patient care under the supervision of licensed staff
- Ability to effectively communicate with staff and psychiatric patients
- Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement
- Able to follow instructions and report observations/behaviors of psychiatric patients to licensed staff in a timely manner (verbally, in writing, or electronically)
- Willingness to learn basic knowledge of developmental and psychiatric disorders, human behavior, age-specific needs, and personality development
- Willingness to learn basic treatment measures to promote mental health appropriate to adult, developmentally disabled or impaired, and/or geriatric populations
- Adequate vision and hearing to recognize and respond to hazardous situations and ensure safety at the facility
- Ability to work effectively with staff in a team approach
- Basic computer skills
Qualifications
- Previous healthcare experience preferred
- Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and/or previous psychiatric experience preferred
- Demonstrated consistent work history preferred
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus
- Veteran or spouse of veteran status a plus
