About the Role

The Patient Care Technician at Erlanger Health Systems provides direct and/or indirect care to patients under the delegation and supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role is essential in the emergency room, supporting medical and nursing staff with a variety of tasks.

Responsibilities

• Assist with phlebotomy, EKG, procedure set-up, and cleaning.
• Provide patient care for a broad patient population.
• Recognize and identify signs and symptoms requiring further evaluation by a licensed nurse.
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
• Adapt to changing situations and priorities in a fast-paced emergency room environment.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent (or meet one of the preferred educational criteria).
• BLS certification completed prior to starting in the unit/department and maintained thereafter.
• De-escalation training/certification (e.g., CPI) within 6 months of hire and maintained ongoing.

Qualifications

Preferred:

• Active certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in Tennessee, First Responder, EMT, Medical Assistant, or equivalent.
• Nursing student who has completed Fundamentals of Nursing.
• Pre-Med student, Military Corpsman, Combat Life Saver, Combat Medic, or Surgical Technician.
• Prior experience in a healthcare setting (preferred but not required).

Employees hired as a Patient Care Technician prior to March 1, 2004, without the above qualifications are grandfathered into the role but must function within the outlined guidelines, skills, and pay grade. All new hires must successfully complete an Erlanger fundamentals checklist, observed demonstration, and pass a written exam.

Standard hours at Children's Hospital in Chattanooga, TN. This is a temporary position.
