About the Role

The Trust Officer II (PBC) is a member of the Private Bank Center (PBC) and is responsible for the administration of a variety of more complex personal trust accounts, executing the bank’s fiduciary responsibilities for trust accounts, and administering agency, IRA, and custody accounts with book revenue exceeding approximately $1.5 million.

This role involves working with private bank clients to execute estate plans, which may include multiple accounts, beneficiaries, insurance, and tax deferral techniques. The strategic focus is on executing the terms of documents where Fifth Third Bank serves as trustee, executor, or agent. The target size of the book is 150-300 accounts, depending on account type concentration.

Accountable for risk management, ensuring actions align with policies and drive a positive customer experience while operating within the bank’s risk appetite.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates fiduciary services for a portfolio of personal trust accounts, including trusts, agency, IRA, and custody accounts.
  • Reviews, supports, and approves or declines discretionary action requests (e.g., distributions) for irrevocable trusts in accordance with trust documents and bank policy.
  • Administers multigenerational trusts, managing discretionary income and principal payments among multiple beneficiaries while mitigating financial and compliance risks.
  • Executes estate plans or documents where Fifth Third serves as trustee, executor, personal representative, guardian, or agent, often exercising discretion in resolving competing beneficiary interests.
  • Retains assigned client base by collaborating with the client service team to deliver high-level service and maintain contact standards.

Account Administration

  • Completes annual administrative reviews and compliance responsibilities for complex accounts, including irrevocable trusts.
  • Engages in fiduciary decision-making, executing decisions to manage financial risk in clients’ best interests.
  • Works with the IM&T Affiliate Support Center (IASC) to open/close accounts, process transactions, and maintain accounts.
  • Ensures compliance with internal policies for client/asset acceptance and discretionary actions through proper documentation.
  • Collaborates with Trust Tax Accountants to ensure accurate tax reporting.
  • Oversees account accuracy, including fees, statements, asset transfers, and internet setup.

Sales and New Business

  • Collaborates with clients’ external centers of influence (e.g., attorneys, CPAs) to generate referrals from the existing client base.
  • Acquires additional assets (account additions) from existing clients.
  • Identifies other bank products/services to deepen client relationships, utilizing Wealth Management Advisors as needed.
  • Interacts with the sales force and portfolio managers to ensure a high-quality client onboarding experience.
  • Communicates with clients and the sales force throughout the onboarding process to set and exceed expectations.

Other Duties

  • Demonstrates sound decision-making, balancing business risks with clients’ best interests.
  • Seeks guidance from Senior Trust Officers and Regional Fiduciary Executives for challenging technical or relationship situations.
  • Upholds the Bancorp Vision and Core Values through personal actions.
  • Recommends enhancements to policies and procedures as appropriate.
  • Maintains knowledge of industry trends (e.g., estate planning, tax law, guardianships) through forums, conferences, or meetings.
  • Participates actively in community affairs and professional associations.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assists with supervision and training of Trust Specialists, Associates, and other support staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or related experience required.
  • 8+ years of experience in financial services, including at least 3 years in trust (fiduciary) or IRA administration.
  • Effective client relationship skills and experience.
  • Knowledge of trust administration, estate planning strategies, and income/gift/estate tax matters.
  • Comprehensive understanding of fiduciary law, estate planning, IRA regulations, and bank policies/procedures.
  • Strong time management, multitasking, and prioritization skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced team environment, collaborating with professionals across disciplines to deliver high-quality client service.
