Responsibilities
- Perform a general range of plant mechanical equipment installation, repair, and overhaul, including skilled machinist work requiring tolerances as low as +.0005”.
- Provide immediate direction to apprentices as needed.
- Work on mechanical equipment such as turbines, pumps, compressors, conveyors, pulverizers, coal samplers, feeders, pulleys, overhead cranes, soot blowers, safety valves, blowers, and power transmission equipment.
- Interpret drawings and sketches to guide work.
- Ensure equipment is properly isolated and protected before work begins (including Workman’s Protection Assurance where applicable).
- Obtain required materials from the storeroom.
- Set up rigging and operate lifting equipment.
- Erect and work from scaffolds.
- Operate mobile equipment, shop equipment, portable power tools, hand tools, and test equipment as required.
- Use acetylene or other cutting/heating torches, checking for explosive gases when necessary.
- Prepare reports of work completed, including sketches if needed, and complete required forms.
- Work independently or collaboratively with other Machinist Repairman or Repairman classifications.
- Perform similar and less skilled work as required.
Special Responsibilities
- Adhere to prescribed safety precautions to protect self and others.
- Ensure temporary workers under your direction follow safety instructions.
- Perform work without disturbing other equipment.
- Execute orders quickly and accurately within required tolerances or specifications.
- Exercise special care to avoid errors in repair and assembly of equipment.
- Maintain proper use and care of tools, materials, and equipment.
- Dispose of surplus and scrap materials after each job and keep work areas clean and orderly.
Working Conditions
- Exposure to a full range of temperatures, from extreme heat to sub-freezing, with sudden changes possible.
- Subject to noise, dust, dirt, fumes, odors, drafts, and inclement weather.
- Work may require cramped spaces and artificial lighting.
- Occasional work at elevations above grade.
- Exposure to hazards from nearby equipment failure, noxious fumes in confined spaces, and standard mechanical construction/maintenance risks.

Qualifications
- Completion of qualification standards as established in the Apprenticeship Program.
- If no graduating apprentice is available, must satisfy requirements in the Supplementary Agreement on Uniform Practices Regarding Promotion to Machinist Repairman Jobs.
- Must be accurate, steady, and calm in emergencies.
- Must possess normal physical strength and endurance.
- Must have no color deficiency in vision.
Pay
Hourly rate: $52.42 (Grade Step OA 048, Step 1 of 1 – Top Step). Position is eligible for annual incentive payments based on company performance, subject to management discretion.
