This is an entry-level position designed for someone who is motivated, detail-oriented, enjoys working with numbers, and is interested in developing a career in payroll.
Responsibilities
- Review weekly employee timecards for completeness and follow up on missing or incorrect information.
- Enter payroll data, including new hires, terminations, pay rate changes, and deductions.
- Assist with preparing and processing bi-weekly payroll.
- Verify payroll information for accuracy before processing.
- Maintain employee payroll records and electronic files.
- Assist with payroll reconciliations and audit reports.
- Respond to employee questions regarding paychecks, direct deposits, tax withholding, and payroll deductions.
- Process employment verifications and payroll-related documentation.
- Assist with payroll tax and garnishment administration.
- Support year-end activities, including W-2 preparation and payroll audits.
- Maintain confidentiality of employee payroll and personnel information.
- Help prepare reports for accounting, human resources, and management.
- Stay current on payroll policies and procedures.
- Perform other payroll, benefit, and administrative duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associate degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field preferred.
- 0–2 years of payroll, accounting, bookkeeping, or administrative experience.
- Basic understanding of payroll concepts is preferred but not required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work with confidential information professionally.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with payroll software such as ADP Workforce Now, UKG, Paychex, or similar systems.
- Basic knowledge of federal and state payroll tax requirements.
- Experience working with timekeeping systems.
- Payroll Fundamentals Certificate or interest in pursuing payroll certification.

Working Conditions

- Ability to remain seated for extended periods.
- Frequent use of a computer, keyboard, and telephone.
The successful candidate will receive on-the-job training in payroll processing, payroll tax compliance, benefits deductions, garnishments, and payroll reporting while developing a thorough understanding of federal and state payroll regulations.
Pay
The expected pay range for Charlotte, NC is $17.00 to $19.00 per hour.
