Payroll Tax Analyst
About the role
This position manages end-to-end payroll tax activities, including resolving payroll tax notices, completing payroll tax registrations, and performing detailed account reconciliations. The role focuses on federal, state, and local payroll tax compliance while supporting accurate and timely reporting within a collaborative payroll tax team.
Responsibilities
- Work through payroll tax notices from federal, state, and local agencies, ensuring each notice is logged, tracked, and resolved accurately and in a timely manner.
- Research and analyze issues identified in payroll tax notices, determine root causes, and implement appropriate corrective actions.
- Prepare, review, and support filings related to Forms 941, 940, and state income tax returns to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
- Manage payroll tax registration processes, including setting up new tax accounts and maintaining existing registrations as needed.
- Perform detailed account reconciliations for payroll tax accounts, identifying discrepancies and ensuring that all balances are accurate and properly supported.
- Maintain organized documentation for tax notices, tax returns, reconciliations, and related correspondence to support audits and internal reviews.
- Collaborate with payroll and accounting team members to resolve tax-related issues and ensure accurate payroll tax reporting.
- Use Excel to analyze payroll tax data, including building and maintaining pivot tables and using VLOOKUPs to validate and reconcile information.
- Support continuous improvement of payroll tax processes by identifying opportunities to streamline workflows and enhance accuracy.
- Utilize available systems and tools, such as Viewpoint and/or SharePoint, to manage information, track tasks, and share documentation within the team.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of payroll tax experience.
- Hands-on experience working with payroll tax notices, including logging, tracking, and resolving them.
- Practical experience with federal Forms 941 and 940, as well as state income tax reporting.
- Experience performing payroll tax registrations for federal, state, and local jurisdictions.
- Strong account reconciliation skills, with the ability to identify, investigate, and resolve discrepancies.
- Proficiency in Excel, including building and using pivot tables and VLOOKUP functions.
- Solid understanding of payroll tax principles and tax accounting concepts.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in handling financial and tax-related data.
- Ability to analyze complex tax information and apply regulatory requirements appropriately.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with payroll, accounting, and other stakeholders.
Pay
The pay range for this position is $33.00 - $35.00/hr. Individual compensation offered within this range will depend on qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
